بسیاری از ما از کار و / یا سبک زندگی مان دلشاد نیستیم، اما تعداد کمی از ما می توانیم به واقع تشخیص دهیم که در زندگی چه می خواهیم، و از آن تعداد هم کمتر، کسانی هستند که شهامت آنرا می یابند که تغییرات لازم برای یافتن شادی و رضایت خاطر را در خود بیافرینند. هر چند بیشتر ما در آسایشی به سر می بریم که صدها سال پیش تنها پادشاهان از آن بهره مند بودند، آمار نشان می دهد که شمار پیوسته فزاینده ای از مردم حالت بیدار شدن از خواب و خیال و افسردگی را می گذرانند. ممکن است از مال و امنیت مالی بهره مند باشیم، اما معنایی در زندگی حرفه ای و اجتماعی خود نمی یابیم.
من به عنوان فردی با تجربه در چنین بحران هایی، در سن بیست و چهار سالگی به مدت دو سال به عنوان مهندس شیمی در کارخانه بزرگی کار می کردم. تمامی آنچه را که جامعه مرا متقاعد کرده بود که برای رسیدن به کامیابی بدانها نیاز دارم در اختیار داشتم، اما احساس تیره روزی می کردم. تصمیم گرفتم که کار پرمعناتری برای خود بیابم.
این گفته بدان معنا نیست که پیشه ی قبلی من نمی تواند برای عده ای پرمعنا نباشد. شکی نیست که این نوع اشتغالات ارزش بالایی برای جامعه دارد و از دید بسیاری از افراد جالب و رضایت بخش اند. فقط چیزی نبود که من به خاطر انجامش به این جهان آمده باشم. هر نقشی می تواند برای انسانی نقش آرمانی و برای انسانی دیگر نقشی کاذب باشد. هر یک از ما برای ایفای نقشی خاص در این نمایشنامه ی زندگی به دنیا آمده ایم، هنگامی که نقش خاص خود را می یابیم و با تمام وجود آنرا ايقا می کنیم، تنها در آن زمان است که احساس شادی و رضایت خاطر خواهیم داشت. هنگامی که مقصود خود را از این زندگی خاکی به خاطر نمی آوریم، یا آنقدر شهامت نداریم که آنرا زندگی کنیم، گرفتار احساس تاخرسندی و خلاء می شویم. در صورتی که با مقصود خود از زندگی تماس حاصل نکنیم، زندگی مان اغلب مکانیکی و فاقد جوهر خواهد بود.
آیا تا به حال شده که برای برداشتن چیزی به اتاقی بروید و پس از ورود به آن فراموش کنید که به چه دلیل به آن اتاق آمده اید؟ برای من این اتفاق افتاده، همچنین دریافته ام که وقتی برمیگردم و می خواهم به همان جایی بازگردم که از آن آمده ام، ناگهان به یاد می آورم که به دنبال چه چیز بودم. این مسئله در مورد زندگی مان بر این کره خاکی نیز صادق است. ما جانهایی نامیرایی هستیم که برای مدتی زودگذر و به منظور تکامل آفرینش و خدمت، این کالبد جسمانی را به خود گرفته ایم. با وجود این، با پا گذاشتن به این کالبد، علت آمدنمان را فراموش می کنیم و با جستجوی لذتهای سطحی و مادیات زندگی مان را تلف میکنیم.
سرانجام، از راه یک سلسله حوادث اغلب ناخوش آیند و مبارزه طلبانه که به خاطر خود ما روی می دهند، مجبور می شویم به خود رجعت کنیم و هدف زندگی خود را به خاطر آوریم.
سمفونی زمین
ما همه مانند اعضای ارکستر سمفونی بزرگ جهان هستیم. هر یک باید و خود را ایفا کنیم. هماهنگی قطعه عالمگیری که می نوازیم (و زندگی نام دارد) دو چیز از هر یک از اعضای ارکستر می طلبد. نخست هر یک باید نقش خود را بلد باشد، و دوم باید توان ایفای آنرا نیز داشته باشد. تمامی جانوران و گیاهان طبیعت و به شکلی غریزی نقش خود را در این سمفونی ایفا می کنند. انتخاب دیگری ندارند. از سوی دیگر ما که از نعمت اختیار بهره مند هستیم، می توانیم انتخاب کنیم که آن نقش را ایفا بکنیم یا نه. همچنین مسئولیم که صفات درونی لازم برای ایفای این نقش را در خود پرورش دهیم.
در حال حاضر می توان گفت که ارکستر سمفونی زمین “خارج می زند ” . بیشتر ما قطعه ای را می نوازیم که “من”ما دیکته می کند تا آنچه را که برای همه بهترین باشد. شمار کمی از ما نقش واقعی خود را در این سمفونی یافته ایم، و از سر ناخرسندی به جای همنوایی با دیگران، به رقابت با آنها می پردازیم. بنابراین یافتن نقش خود در زندگی نه تنها برای خودمان ضرورت دارد، بلکه برای هماهنگی اجتماعی و جهانی نیز لازم  است.
در مواردی لازم است از میان اهداف زیر، تعدادی را برگزینیم:
 الف. پول یا پوچی
ب. آسایش با خلاقیت
ج. امنیت با تکامل
د. پیروزی ” اجتماعی با مسئولیت اجتماعی
ه.کامیابی سطحی یا خرسندی واقعی درونی

و. ارضای انتظارات دیگران با پیروی از ندای فرزانه درون.

لازم است با دانایی دست به انتخاب بزنیم. بیایید ببینیم برای تماس با هدف زندگی خود چه می توان کرد.
رهایی از برنامه ریزی اجتماعی

لازم است خود را از شرطی شدگی های اجتماعی در مورد آنکه چه کاری ارزشمند است رها کنیم. اجتماع برای هر کاری ارزشی معین قائل می شود. این ارزشمندی معمولا بر پایه میزان حقوق مادی، شأن اجتماعی یا قدرتی که به ارمغان می آورد، استوار است. با این حال، ممکن است این در آمد، منزلت یا قدرت اجتماعی، ما را دلشاد نکند. قاعدة اجتماع برای موفقیت بر پایه دیدگاهی نسبتا سطحی از سرشت انسانی استوار است. در مقام کودکانی خردسال، ما به شکلی برنامه ریزی می شویم که از لحاظ مالی و اقتصادی احساس ناامنی کنیم. همچنین به نحوی شرطی می شویم که اهمیت بیش از حدی برای آرای دیگران نسبت به خودمان قائل شویم و می خواهیم هر طور شده پذیرش، احترام و ستایش آنها را برانگیزانیم. این نوع برنامه ریزی شدن به بروز اضطراب، ترس، تنش عصبی و بیماری می انجامد. در فرآیند گوش دادن به ندای درون، ممكن است دریابیم که با انتقاد خانواده و دوستانی روبرو می شویم که شاید از تغییرات سبک زندگی ما به وحشت افتاده باشند. این تغییرات ممکن است آنها را وادار کند تا با به فرض های خود درباره زندگی شک کنند و یا ما را نفی کنند. حرکت دوم برای آنها آسانتر است. در این موارد برای آنکه واکنش های آنها تأثیری در ما به وجود نیاورد، لازم است از نیروی درونی کافی بهره مند باشیم. در عین حال، لازم است آنقدر نسبت به آنها مهر در دل احساس کنیم که بخواهیم آنها را ببخشیم تا شاید به آنها کمک شود تا متوجه شوند که ما سعی نمی کنیم از ما با از زندگی بگریزیم، بلکه صرفا طالب آزادی در پیگیری کاری هستیم که ما را ارضا کند. پس از گذراندن دوره ای از خودکاوی، ممکن است حتی به این نتیجه برسیم که درست مشغول انجام همان کاری هستیم که به خاطرش به دنیا آمده ایم. در این صورت، به احتمال زیاد احساس رضایت خاطر خواهیم کرد. در عین حال امکان دارد که نتوانیم با آن حقایقی که به ما اجازه  میدهند تا از آن هدف لذت ببریم و عاشقانه و ایثارگرانه بدان بپردازیم، تماس حاصل کنیم.

اغلب ساده ترین نقشها می توانند بزرگترین درسهای معنوی را به ما بیاموزند. برای نمونه، نقش مادر بودن یا پدر بودن را در نظر بگیرید. امروزه بسیاری از مردم اهمیت چندانی برای این نقشها قائل نمی شوند زیرا تصور می شود که کار در یک اداره شأن اجتماعی بالاتر با خلاقیت بیشتری دارد. با این حال، نقشی مهمتر از نقش پدر و مادر وجود ندارد.. آینده جهان به کیفیت وجودی کودکان امروز متکی است. در مقام بزرگسال باید بدانیم که دنیای درونی آنها، کیفیت وجودی و رفتارشان به روشنی فرآورده میزان مهر و توجهی است که در مقام کودک دریافت میکنند. بسیاری از والدین تصور می کنند که اگر بیشتر کار کنند، می توانند چیزهای بهتری به فرزندانشان ببخشند، برای نمونه فرصت تحصیلاتی بهتر یا سطح بالاتری از رفاه مادی. انسان ها نه به دلیل میزان تحصیلات، که در اثر شخصیت شان، به انسانی بزرگ تبدیل می شوند.
غلبه بر ترس
لازم است بر ترس خود از موارد زیر غلبه کرد:
1- شکست
2- آرای دیگران
3- احتمال عدم موفقیت مالی
4- احتمال بی عیب و نقص نبودن کاری که می کنیم
5- احتمال اشتباهکاری
ما در حال گذراندن روند تکاملیم. اگر کمال یافته بودیم، به این جهان نمی آمدیم. اشتباه کردن به هنگام فراگیری و آفرینندگی طبیعی است. درک این نکته که هرچند کامل نیستیم ولی به هر حال ارزشمند و دوست داشتنی هستیم، حائز اهمیت فراوان است. همچنین لازم است که بر انواع ترس از چیزها و وضعیت های خاص غلبه کنیم، نظیر ترس از هواپیما، آسانسور، قایق، بیمارستان، ذرات خاک و آلودگی، میکروب، بعضی از مردم، حیوانات و مانند آنها. این ترسها می توانند مانع از تحقق هدف زندگی مان شوند. در قالب تجلیاتی از شعور الهی، می خواهیم ابزار کارآی آن شعور باشیم، بتوانیم هر نقشی را که به سود همه تمام می شود ایفا کنیم. ترس های مان مانعی در مقابل این کارآیی اند.
