وقتی که تصمیم می گیریم چه کاری را انجام دهیم،دوست داریم انتخاب و تصمیم گیری ما انعطاف پذیر باشد.می خواهیم خودمان تصمیم بگیریم چه کاری را در چه موقعی و چگونه انجام دهیم،چه موقعی دیگر آن را انجام ندهیم،و آیا اصلاً آن را انجام دهیم یا ندهیم.می خواهیم خودمان تصمیم بگیریم که وقت خود را چگونه بگذرانیم.می خواهیم خودمان اعمالمان را تعیی کنیم،نه اینکه کس دیگری یا اجبار های محیطی ما را وادار کنند تا عمل خاصی را انجام دهیم.می خواهیم رفتار ما با تمایلات،ترجیحات،و خواست هایمان ارتباط داشته باشد نه اینکه از آن ها جدا باشد و می خواهیم رفتار ما از ترجیحات و تمایلات مان ناشی شود و آن ها را بیان کند.می خواهیم هدف هایمان را آزادانه تعیین کنیم و آزدانه تصمیم بگیریم چه چیزی برای ما اهمیت دارد و چه چیزی ندارد.به عبارات دیگر،ما نیاز به خود مختاری داریم.

رفتار،زمانی خود مختار است که تمایلات،ترجیحات،و خواست های ما فرآیند تصمیم گیری مارابرای انجام دادن یا انجام ندادن فعالیتی خاص،هدایت کنند.وقتی نیروهای بیرونی ما را وادار می سازند به شیوه ی خاصی فکر،احساس،یا رفتار کنیم،خودمختار نیستیم(یعنی رفتارمان را دیگران تعیین کرده اند.)

خودمختاری به صورت رسمی عبارت است از: نیاز به تجربه کردن انتخاب در آغاز کردن و تنظیم کردن رفتار.آدم خود مختار کسی است که میل دارد به جای اینکه رویدادهای محیط اعمال او را تعیین کنند،خودش حق انتخاب داشته باشد.

حمایت کردن از خودمختار 

محیط های حامی خود مختاری،افراد را ترغیب می کنند هدف های خودشان را تعیین کرده،رفتار خودشان را هدایت کرده،روش خودشان را برای حل کردن مشکلات انتخاب نمایند،و اصولاً تمایلات و ارزش های خود را دنبال کنند.محیط های حامی خود مختاری،انگیزش درونی،کنجکاوی، و میل به چالش افراد را افزایش می دهند.البته،محیط های حامی خودمختاری،آسان گیر،بی توجه،و مسامحه کار نیستند.در عوض،وقتی که افراد می کوشند برای فرزندانشان،دانش آموزانشان،کارکنانشان،یا ورزشکارانشان محیط های حامی خودمختاری به وجود آورند سخت تلاش می کنند تمایلات،نیاز ها،و کوشش های آن ها را تشخیص دهند و از آن ها حمایت کنند.

محیط کنترل کننده

محیط کنترل کننده،برعکس محیط حامی خود مختاری است.محیط های کنترل کننده،نیاز افراد را به خود مختار نادیده می گیرند و در عوض به آن ها فشار می آورند تا از روش های فکر کردن،احساس کردن،یا رفتار کردن از پیش ترتیب یافته یا به  صورت بیرونی تجویز شده،پیروی کنند.بنابراین،آنچه در محیط کنترل کننده مورد حمایت قرارمی گرد،خودمختاری فرد نیست بلکه عاملی بیرونی است،مانند آنچه آموزگار از دانش آموزانش می خواهد انجام دهند،آنچه مدیر از کارمندانش می خواهد انجام دهند،ا انچه مربی از ورزشکاران می خواهد هنگام تمرین کردن انجام دهند.محیط های کنترل کننده به جای حمایت کردن از خودمختاری افراد،رفتار آن ها را کنترل می کنند.
