متخصصی چون رئیس پیشین انجمن روانشناسی آمریکا پیشنهاد کرد که برای تقلیل خشونت در سطح جهانی دارویی کشف کنیم تا به خورد مردم داده شود.درخواست این چنین راه حلی قابل فهم و حتی رقت انگیز است.اما بسیار غیرمحتمل است که بتوان دارویی تولید کرد که بی رحمی رابدون از پا انداختن کامل نظام انگیزشی مصرف کنندگان آن،تقلیل دهد.داروهای شیمیایی از عهده ی تمایزهای دقیقی که فرایندهای روانشناختی به وجودمی آورند،برنمی آیند .بدین سان ما می توانیم مردی مهربان و صلح دوست مانند آلبرت انیشتین را تصور کنیم که در عین حال منبعی از نیروی خلاقانه ،شجاعت ، شایستگی ، وتدبیر است. اینگونه مردان را ترکیبی ظریف ودقیق از نیروهای فیزیولوژیکی، روان شناختی،قابلیت های ارثی، وارزش های اکتسابی به وجود می آورند. تصور دارویی که بتواند از عهده ای کار برآیند مشکل است .بر علاوه،مهار رفتار انسان به وسیله مواد شیمیایی، کیفیتی کابوس وار دارد برای اعمال اینگونه روش ها به چه کسی می توان اعتماد کرد؟ احتمالا راه حل های ساده واثبات شده ای وجود ندارد.

یقینا می توان مجموعه ای استدلال های منطقی ومستدل تدوین کرد که خطرات پرخاشگری و خشونت وپریشانی حاصل از اعمال پرخاشگری را مطرح سازد. حتی مطمئن هستیم که می توان بسیاری از مردم را متقاعد ساخت که جنگ ناشایسته ، و خشونت در خیابان ها ، نامطلوب است. لیکن اینگونه استدلال ها، صرف نظراز اینکه چقدر درست و صحیح و چه اندازه قانع کننده باشند، احتمالا رفتار خشونت آمیز را به مقدار زیادی کاهش نمی دهند. فرد حتی اگر بداند که رفتار پرخاشگرانه به طور کلی نامطلوب است،باز ها خشونت یا پرخاشگری خواهد کرد، مگر اینکه معتقد باشد پرخاشگری و خشونت برای شخص او نامطلوب است . همانطور که ارسطو اظهار داشته است ، بسیاری از مردم را نمی توان فقط با رفتار منطقی مجاب کرد زیرا استدلال مبتنی بر دانش، نیاز به آموزش دارد و کسانی هستند که نمی توان آنان را آموزش داد . به علاوه چون مساله مهار پرخاشگری در اوایل کودکی حائز اهمیت است، و در این زمان ، فرد خردسال تر از آن است که بتوان برای او استدلال کرد ، پس در چنین موقعیتی، استدلال های منطقی ارزش اندکی دارند. به همین دلایل است که روانشناسان اجتماعی به جستجوی فنون متقاعدسازی متفاوتی برآمده اند .بسیاری از این فنون با در نظر داشتن کودکان پدید آمده اند، اما برای بزرگسالان هم به کار می روند.

برای مردم عادی، یک راه بدیهی برای کاهش خشونت ، تنبیه است . اگر مردی اقدام به نزاع یا آدم کشی کند, راه حل ساده این است که او را به زندان انداخته و در موارد افراطی، به قتل رسانید. اگر بچه ای علیه والدین، خواهران و برادران یا همبازی های خود پرخاشگری کند ، می توان او را کتک زد، سراو داد کشید، او را از امتیازاتش محروم کرد یا در او احساس گناه به وجود آورد. فرض بر این است که این تنبیه برای او درس عبرتی خواهد شد، و پیش از تکرار آن عمل، دقت لازم را خواهد کرد، و اینکه هر چه تنبیه شدیدتر باشد موثرتر خواهد بود. لیکن موضوع به این سادگی نیست . تنبیه شدید ممکن است موقتا موثر باشد ، اما در صورتی که با احتیاط کامل اعمال نشود، می تواند در بلند مدت اثر معکوس داشته باشد. مشاهده والدین و اطفالشان در دنیای واقعی ، به طور مکرر نشان ذاذه است که والدینی که تنبیه شدید اعمال می کنند، فرزندانی به بار می آورند که بی اندازه پرخاشگر هستند، یا در بزرگسالی برای دستیابی به هدف های شخصی و سیاسی خود، از ابزار های خشونت آمیز طرفداری می کنند.
