خشم واکنشی است در قبال تهدیدی واقعی، خیالی یا مبهم. این واکنش در واقع احساسی است طبیعی که برای همه ما بوجود می آید. مهمترین عامل خشم ناکامی است، ناکامی یعنی نرسیدن به خواسته های فردی و آن وقتی است که عاملی مانع رسیدن فرد به هدف و خواسته شود.خشم ابزاری دفاعی است که می تواند علاوه بر ناکامی در این موارد نیز به وجود آید: تحقیر شدن، پایمال شدن حق، دخالت دیگران در امور خصوصی ما، موقعیت ها، اشیا و خودمان هم می توانیم در ایجاد خشم دخیل باشیم، گاهی تفسیر، ذهنیت و افکار ما باعث بروز خشم میشود و گاهی خشم ابزاری است که ما برای رسیدن به خواسته هایمان از آن استفاده میکنیم. همچنین می توان از علل دیگر خشم الگوبرداری، ناامنی،دیدن عصبانیت، تبدیل برانگیختگی جنسی به خشم و ضعف مهارت های اجتماعی یاد کرد. عصبانیت به معنی رفتاری است که در اثر خشم بوجود می آید. مهمترین پیامد منفی عصبانیت اختلالی است که در ارتباط ما با دیگران بوجود می آورد. پس میتوان گفت انسان خشمگین می شود ولی خودش را عصبانی میکند.

پرخاشگری یا خشونت نوع هیجانی و شدید و کنترل نشده عصبانیت است. پرخاشگری در افراد ناامنی رخ می دهد که در اثر ناکامی، احساس انهدام و نابودی می کنند. این احساس نابودی در اکثر مواقع غیرواقعی و در اثر تفسیر، قضاوت برداشت نادرست فرد پرخاشگر بوجود می آید. پرخاشگری در اثر تهدید و ناامنی می تواند “واکنشی” یا “انتقام جویانه” باشد. در پرخاشگری واکنشی فرد صرفا مرزهای خود را می بندد در حالی که در پرخاشگری انتقام جویانه فرد به مرزهای دیگری تعرض می کند. هر چه روان شکننده تر باشد احساس نا امنی بیشتر است و بیشتر از پرخاشگری انتقام جویانه استفاده می کند.

خشونت فیزیکی و کلامی و جنسی رشد نایافته ترین صور خشم به شمار می آید. این در حالی است که خشونت می تواند رشدیافته و والایش یافته باشد مانند خشونت در رقابت های ورزشی و یا خشونتی که در یک تابلوی نقاشی دیده می شود. همچنین خشونت می تواند پنهان باشد مانند رانندگی های بی محابا و خشن.

1- واقعیت را آنگونه که هست نمی بیند و حقیقت را آنگونه که باید باشد مشاهده نمی کند بلکه سعی دارد در آن دخل و تصرف کند. در واقع ذهن او گزارش درست از واقعیت نمیدهد.

2- مسئولیت را یا بیش از حد می پذیرد یا اصلا نمی پذیرد.

3- در گذشته یا آینده زندگی می کنند و از حال خود لذت نمی برد.

4- عزت نفس پایینی دارند. خود را حقیر و ناچیز می داند.

5- اعتماد به نفس کمی دارد. نگران آن است که از عهده کارها بر نیاید و موفقیت های خود را نتیجه حوادث و اتفاقاتی خارج از کنترل خود و دیگران می داند.

6- از یک طرف از قدرت و قدرتمند متنفر است و از طرف دیگر تشنه قدرت قدرت است.

7- بیش از دیگران از حوادث اطراف احساس شدید ناراحتی و خشم میکند(بزرگ نمایی)

8- یا تحمل می کند یا شدیدا بروز می دهد.

9- انتظارشان از دیگران غیر واقع بینانه است.
