قواعد کنجکاوی! از عهده ی پرسش ها برآمدن
انسان نیازی اساسی دارد که از جهان خود سردرآورد، و این نیاز از همان ابتدای زندگی، آغاز می شود. همه ی کودکان خردسال تشنه ی یادگیری هستند و به آن نیاز دارند. آنان از همان روز اول تولد، زندگی خود را با تقلید کردن و کنجکاوی آغاز می کنند. نوزادان به مدتی طولانی، بر پشت نمی خوابند. آنها مصمم هستند بچشند، لمس کنند، بلند شوند و بنشینند، چهار دست و پا حرکت کنند، جست وجو نمایند، برخیزند و راه بروند، خودشان غذا بخورند و بعدها نیز خودشان لباس بپوشند. جست وجوی ناشناخته ها، اعتماد به نفس زیادی می طلبد. کنجکاوی درباره ی جهان  و قدرت و توان خویش، تخته ی پرش یادگیری در تمام مدت عمر است. چگونه است که غالبا کنجکاوی طبیعی و اعتماد و اراده ی استوار کودک شیرخوار، لطمه می خورد؟ در اینجا راههایی ارائه می شود که کنجکاوی تا بزرگسالی، فعال و پویا نگاه داشته شود.
کنجکاوی به معنای تمایل به دانستن و اشتیاق به یادگرفتن است. کنجکاوی ممکن است ما را گرفتار مخمصه کند، ولی ما را به پرسیدن و جمع آوری اطلاعات تازه وامی دارد. کنجکاوی نیرویی است که ذهن را تغذیه می کند تا زنده و بالنده شود. کنجکاوی، یک نیروی خودانگیزشی شکست ناپذیر است. انگیزه یعنی دلیل، و برای انجام هر کار، چه دلیلی بهتر از تمایل برای دانستن؟ کنجکاوی نیرویی است که از درون ما میجوشد و بدین معنا است که ما صاحب آن هستیم. و چون از درون مامی جوشد، به احتمال زیاد، بادوام است.
این مهم است که ما حس کنجکاوی کودکان را پرورش دهیم. اما همانطور که همه ی والدین میدانند، گاهی اوقات، گفتن این حرف آسان تر از عمل کردن به آن است. نخستین مانعی که بر سر راه ذهنی پو یا قرار می گیرد، مفهوم پذیرفته شده و و گسترده ی “کودک خوب” است . ما خودمان معمولا پیام های آشکاری را می فرستیم که بچه ی خوب کسی است که چیزی را به چالش نگیرد و دردسر ساز نباشد. دومین چیزی که کنجکاوی را سرکوب میکند، ناشکیبایی ما در برابر هر نوع پرسش است، نه فقط آنهایی که مبارزه طلبانه هستند.

کودکان «خوب» در دسر درست نمی کنند
همه ی کودکان نیاز دارند به نحوی تأیید شوند و مورد توجه قرار گیرند. رزماری رابرتز طی دو سال مطالعه در آکسفورد شایر و زیر نظر گرفتن کودکان در خانه و کودکستان و محیط های مدرسه، دریافت که کودکان شیرخوار و کودکان خردسال به شدت نیازمند توجه هستند ، بسیار زود یاد می گیرند که به نحوی رفتار کنند که افراد «مهم» اطراف خود را راضی و خرسند بسازند. برای کودک، خوب بودن بدین معنا است که بزرگان (اشخاص بالغ) از او راضی باشند. اما یادگیری خوب بودن، همچنین بدین معنا است که ممکن است چیز زیادی یاد نگیرید» (ضمیمه آموزشی تایمز، ۲ فوریه ۱۹۶۰)
رابرتز از پدرها و مادرها پرسید که چه زمانی نسبت به کودکان خود بدترین احساس منفی را دارند. اغلب آنان گفتند: زمانی که کودکشان به طور شفاهی به آنها اعتراض می کند و جیغ و داد. گله گزاری، و گریه و زاری می کند. آنها جر و بحث با کودک را خوشایند نمی دانستند، ولی زمانی که فرزندانشان با یکدیگر دعوا می کردند، احساسی به شدت منفی پیدا می کردند، و هنگامی که آنان در بیرون از خانه اعتراض می کردند و آنان را انگشت نمای خاص و عام می کردند، احساس طردشدگی می کردند. زمانی که کودکان می خواهند مورد توجه قرار گیرند، معمولا به گریه و اعتراض متوسل می شوند. اعتراض های کلامی دیگر، مانند جیغ و داد و گله گزاری، نشان می دهد که کودک می تواند فکر کند و سؤال کند. رابرتز توجه کرد که وقتی ما از آنان می خواهیم “خوب باشند”، معمولا منظورمان این است که آنها نباید از ما سؤال کنند، یا با ما به بحث بپردازند؛ نباید به استقبال خطر شکست بروند؛ نباید طرح های خود را عملی کنند؛ یا درباره ی موفقیت ها و اشتباهات خود حرفی بزنند. جواب پس دادن، یکی از تحمل ناپذیرترین موارد است. ولی اعتراض، بخش مهمی از راههای برقراری ارتباط است. اعتراض، جوهر بنیادی بحث و گفت وگو است که در تعلیم و تربیت در دوران رشد و بلوغ کودکان به طور فزاینده ای، مورد تشویق قرار می گیرد. بدون اعتراض کردن، کودکان نمی توانند یا بگیرند که تعارض ها را برطرف سازند و عقاید جديد خود را شکل دهند. کودکانی که یاد می گیرند فقط چیزهایی را یاد بگویند که تصور می کنند ما می خواهیم بشنویم ، صرفا به صورت بازتاب هایی از خودمان در می آیند و مسلما به کند و کاو در خود نمی پردازند. ولی در اینجا نیز، توازنی وجود دارد که باید به آن دست یافت. اینکه آنان نیاز دارند سرانجام بتوانند به شیوه ای مودبانه و سازنده و در زمان مناسب، از موقعیت دشوار خود دفاع کنند. اما آنان همچنین نیازمند آن هستند که درک کنند که زمانهایی وجود دارد که ادب حکم می کند بزرگوارانه عقب نشینی کنند.  می خود، می پردازند. لازم است آنان حد و مرزهای متفاوت را تشخیص دهند تا بتوانند به هنگام لزوم، بر سر تصمیم خود باقی بمانند یا  زبان در کام بکشند. ما نیازمند این هستیم که یاد بگیریم اعتراضهای آنان را حمله ی شخصی تلقی نکنیم و مدافعانه و به طرزی تحریک آمیز واکنش نشان ندهیم.

چرا شنیدن واژه ی «چرا»، اینقدر مشکل است؟
درباره ی کنجکاوی، ضرب المثلی هست که می گوید: «فضول را بردند جهنم!» یعنی فضولی به تو نیامده. اما پدران و مادران خشمگین، ده ها سال است که آن را شادمانه تکرار کرده اند تا کودکان خود را از پرسش های عذاب آوری که از آنان می کنند و به طور کلی مایه ی دردسر می شوند، بازدارند. امروزه، به احتمال زیاد می گوییم: این قدر سؤال نکن یا راحتم بگذار. برای چه می خواهی بدانی؟، این جوابها به طور ضمنی، بیش از پاسخ سنتی، توهین مستقیم به کودک تلقی می شوند، و به احتمال زیاد، کنجکاوی کودک را نابود می کنند. پرسشهای کودکان می تواند خشمگین کننده، ناخوانده، تهدیدکننده، و قطعا دشوار و خسته کننده باشد. بیشتر از آن، بعضی اوقات نشان دهنده ی ناآگاهی خود ما هستند که ممکن است برایمان ناراحت کننده باشد. آسان تر خواهد بود به جای اینکه به کودک بگوییم: «برو بیرون»د بگوییم: «نمی دانم.» کودکان همواره از روی کنجکاوی ذاتی سؤال نمی کنند. کودکان ممکن است به هر دلیلی سؤال کنند. ما مجبور نیستیم به همه ی آنها با یک میزان علاقه و اشتیاق، یا در همان لحظه ای که سؤال می کنند، پاسخ دهیم. مثلا، زمانی که کودکان خیلی کوچک می پرسند «چرا» و مرتب آن را تکرار می کنند، برای این است که آن را به مثابه ی راهی برای کنترل و هدایت گفت وگوهایی کشف کرده اند که تا آن زمان بزرگسالان کلا در اختیار خود داشته اند. آنان با سؤال کردن، جلب توجه می کنند. در دست آنان، سؤال کردن، ابزاری نیرومند برای کنترل خود است، درست مانند «نه» گفتن که پیش از آن بوده است. همچنین راهی است برای پی بردن به چیزهایی که آنان را سردرگم می کند. ما نباید این چراها را نادیده بگیریم، ولی درک علت این سؤالات که به سرعت و به تناوب می آیند و بخصوص در مراحل رشد دیده میشوند، سودمند است. کودکان دو سال و نیمه می پرسند چی؟ و چه کسی؟ مانند اسم عروسکت چیه؟ در سه سالگی می پرسند «چرا؟. کی؟ و چگونه؟ » سوالهایی که بیشتر جنبه ی انتزاعی دارند.

پاسخ به پرسش ها 
بنابراین، پرسش های معین، مستلزم واکنش ها و پاسخ هایی متفاوت از سوی دیگران است. اگر ما انواع مختلف پرسش های کودکان را درک کنیم، می توانیم در پاسخ هایمان اندکی حساس تر و دارای حسن انتخاب باشیم و در عین حال قوه ی تمیز خود را حفظ کنیم، مثلا، ما حق داریم در دام پرسش هایی که مطالبه کننده ی چیزهایی هستند که قبلا از آنها امتناع کرده ایم و دلایل خودمان را شرح داده ایم و به حرف های کودکان در آن باره، گوش دادهایم، اسیر نشویم. اگر کودکان تنها به این منظور از ما پرسش می کنند تا ما را درگیر سازند تا با آنها به گفت و شنود بنشینیم، می توانیم درباره صرف وقت فعالانه در انجام دادن بعضی کارها با کودکانمان تدبیری بیندیشیم تا آنان به چیزی توجه کنند که به نظر می رسد مورد نیازشان است. وقتی کودکان به حد کافی بزرگ شدند، سودمندترین قانون کلی در مورد زمان پاسخگویی به سؤال این است که به طریقی پاسخ دهیم که به آنها کمک شود خودشان جواب را پیدا کنند. این واکنش، ابتکار عمل را به دست خود آنها می دهد. و در مورد پرسش هایی که به چالش یا خواسته ای مربوط می شود، از آنان حمایت می کند تا از پیش فکر کنند و یاد بگیرند که موقعیت ها و مردم را بررسی کنند. کودکان شما چه نوع پرسشی را بیشتر مطرح می کنند و شما چگونه به آنان پاسخ می دهید؟ در اینجا چند نمونه آمده است:

پرسش های خصوصی 
قبل از اینکه با پدر آشنا شوی، چند تا دوست پسر داشتی؟
ببین عزیزم، چیزهایی هستند که والدین حق دارند آنها را به طور خصوصی، برای خودشان حفظ کنند. لزومی نمی بینیم به این پرسش پاسخ بدهم.
پرسش های نگران کننده
اگر من یک دختر را از راه به در می کردم، تو چه کار میکردی؟
این پرسش به پاسخ متفکرانه احتیاج دارد. من به اندکی زمان نیاز دارم تا درباره ی آن فکر کنم و پاسخ بدهم.  پنج دقیقه ی دیگر برگرد و به من بگو گمان می کنی چه پاسخی به پرسشت می دهم.
پرسش های سخت و متوقعانه
چراا من نمی توانم به خانه دوستم بروم؟
قبلا به سه دلیل به تو گفتم که چرا حالا نمی توانی این کار را بکنی. بگو ببینم من چه گفتم. گمان میکنم تو همین حالا هم میتوانی دلایل من را حدس بزنی. آیا می توانی به من بگویی به چه دلیل نباید به خانه دوستت بروی؟
پرسشهای حاکی از وابستگی
من نمی توانم این کار را انجام بدهم. بیا به من کمک کن! کمی گیر کرده ای. دوباره سعی کن شاید خودت بتوانی از پس آن کار بر بیایی. اگر نشد، من می آیم کمکت می کنم.
پرسش های قاطع و مبارزه طلبانه
اگر من از انجام آن کار امتناع کنم، آنوقت چه کار میکنی؟
شاید بخواهی از انجام این کار خودداری کنی، اما گمان نمیکنم که این کار را بکنی. اما اگر این کار را بکنی، می فهمی که کارت سخت می شود.
تشویق کنجکاوی
زمانی که با کودک نوزاد تا سه ساله سر و کار دارید :
– بگذارید به جست وجو بپردازد و بازی کند.
– به اولین پرسشهای او پاسخ دهید.

– در صورتی که در خانه کامپیوتر دارید، او را با آن آشنا و درگیر کنید. نرم افزارهایی هستند که اشتیاق کودکان. حتی کودکان خیلی کم سن و سال را در کسب تجربه از کاربرد کامیوتر، افزایش می دهند.
هنگامی که با کودکان سه تا هشت ساله سر و کار دارید:
– آزمایش و تجربه را تشویق کنید: ” چه اتفاقی خواهد افتاد اگر…؟ ” در کتاب های علمی ساده، فعالیت های خاصی به کودکان توصیه می شود که می توانند آنها را در خانه انجام دهند.
– آنها را با کتاب های داستانی آشنا کنید.بسیاری از آنها به شکل «واقعیت های مجذوب کننده و طراحی شده اند که حس شگفتی و کنجکاوی کودکان را بر می انگیزد. این کتاب ها بخصوص در میان پسرانی طرفدار دارند که بیش از دختران بازی های خیال پردازانه ی خود را کنار می گذارند.
– خودتان الگوی کنجکاوی باشید. از خودتان درباره ی چیزهایی سوال کنید که گیج و متحیرتان می سازند: تعجب می کنم که چرا…؟ نشان بدهید که ندانست چیزها مهم نیست بلکه تمایل به پی بردن به آنها مهم است.
وقتی با کودکان هشت تا دوازده ساله سروکار دارید: 
– خودیاری را تشویق کنید : هنگامی که کودکان می خواهند به موضوعی پی ببرند، به آنها توصیه کنید از کتاب های مرجع یا سی دی های دایرة المعارف استفاده کنند. این وسایل ممکن است گران قیمت باشند، ولی می توانید به کتابخانه، خانواده یا همسایه ها مراجعد کنید تا مشکل هزینه را تعدیل سازید.
– به تدریج به آنان استقلال بدهید و بگذارید با دوستان خود به تفحص و جست وجوی محله بپردازند.
– از آنان بپرسید آیا چیز جالبی در تلویزیون دیده اند که احیانا بخواهند آن را خودشان آزمایش کنند.
هنگامی که با کودکان دوازده تا هفده ساله سروکار دارید:
– زمانی که کودکان پا به نوجوانی می گذارند، احتمالا همه ی هم و غم ما این است که کنجکاوی آنان را به جای تغذیه و تقویت، مهار کنیم.
