برای یادگیری و به خاطر سپردن هر مطلبی اولین شرط، توجه به آن مطلب است که اگر دانش آموز از هوش بالایی هم برخوردار باشد ولی به مطلب با موضوع توجه نکند، نمی تواند آن را فرا گیرد. علت افت و شکست تحصیلی برخی از دانش آموزان ناشی از عدم توجه به معلم و مواد تدریس شده و نیز عدم تمرکز حواس هنگام مطالعه و انجام تکالیف درسی است. برخی از دانش آموزان و نیز بزرگسالان اغلب از ضعف حافظه ی خود گله می کنند. مطالعات روی آنها نشان داده است که اغلب این افراد برخلاف ادعای خود از حافظه خوبی برخوردارند. اشکال در آنجاست که در هنگام  فراگیری مطالب مطرح شده و مورد نظر توجه نکرده اند. در واقع ان آنها از ضعف توجه و تمرکز است نه ضعف حافظه. بدیهی است تا به موضوع یا محرکی توجه نشود آن موضوع یا محرک وارد  حافظه نخواهد شد و تا چیزی نیز وارد حافظه نشده باشد امکان بازیابی و به خاطر آوردن آن وجود ندارد. هر چه بیشتر و دقیق تر به  چیزی توجه کنیم، از مجموعه ی حواس بیشتر استفاده شده، درک و فهم و بازیابی آن از حافظه آسان تر خواهد شد. بین نگاه کردن و توجه کردن باید تمیز قائل شد. توجه، عملی ارادی است، در حالی که نگاه کردن غیرارادی است. افرادی که از ضعف حافظه ی خود شکوه دارند به محرکها و پدیده ها نگاه می کنند نه توجه.
نکته ای که باید به آن توجه داشت این است که دامنه ی توجه انسان در کودکی اندک است. برای مثال، حدود پانزده دقیقه بیشتر نمی توان توجه یک کودک شش ساله را به موضوعی جلب کرد بدون ان که حواسش پرت شود، اما خوشبختانه از طریق تمرین و ممارست می توان این دامنه را افزایش داد، به طوری که یک انسان
تا حدود نود دقیقه نیز می تواند بدون خستگی به موضوعی توجه کند.

برای افزایش و جلب توجه و تمرکز دانش آموزان، اولیا و مربیان میتوانند از روش های زیر استفاده کنند.

1- استفاده از تصاویر : تصاویر بیش از کلمات جلب توجه می کنند و تصاویر آدمی و حیوانات بیش از تصاویر اشیا (و تصاویر حیوانات آشنا بیش از حيوانات نا آشنا) مورد توجه قرار می گیرند، لن در درس هایی مانند ریاضی، می توان به جای تصویر اشیای بی جان مانند مواد، چوب کبریت، خوشه ی گندم و … از تصویر موجودات جاندار و حتی خود آنها استفاده کرد.
2- استفاده از محرک های شنیداری: گرچه آموزش از طریق داستان و شعر بیش از روش های کلاسیک مؤثر است، ولی اگر این آموزش با آهنگ (سرود) و ریتم (ضرب) همراه شود، جلب توجه بیشتری می کند. چنانچه فعالیت های فوق با حرکت، پا کوبیدن، دست زدن و حرکات بدنی نیز همراه شود، در جلب و نگه داری توجه تأثیر خواهد داشت، زیرا از حافظه ی حرکتی (عملی) استفاده شده است.
3- استفاده از رنگ: بعضی از رنگ ها مانند قرمز و آبی توجه بیشتری را به خود جلب می کنند. هنگامی که تعداد زیادی از کلمات به یک رنگ معین، مثلا سیاه روی کاغذ سفید یا با گچ سفید روی تخته سیاه  نوشته شده اند، در آنها نوعی تشابه و عدم تفاوت وجود دارد و جلب توجه کمک نمی کند، ولی اگر در این متن، مطلبی، واژه ی جدیدی
عددی تازه و … را به رنگی متفاوت (قرمز، آبی) بنویسیم، بعلت تفاوت جلب توجه می کند، لذا باید در صورت امکان از این دو رنگ بیش استفاده کرد.

4-استفاده از اندازه: اندازه ی حروف نیز در حالتی که از کلمات درشت تر  در متن کلمات ریز ، یا از کلمات ریز تر در متن کلمات درشت تر  تر استفاده شود، عامل مؤثر در جلب توجه به شمار  می آید.

5-استفاده از تکرار: تکرار یکی از عوامل مؤثر در جلب توجه است. اگر در آغاز، کودک یا نوجوانی متوجه محرکی نشده باشد، تکرار آن معمولا توجه او را جلب می کند. باید توجه داشت که اگر تکرار بیش از حد ادامه یابد، باعث کم شدن توجه می شود. تکرار نیز نباید یکنواخت باشد. اگر موضوع یا مطلبی را همیشه به یک صورت تکرار کنیم، عادی می شود و جلب توجه نمی کند. از این رو، تکرار باید همراه با تغییر و تازگی باشد.
6- استفاده از تازگی: چیزهای تازه معمولا بیش از چیزهایی که کودک و نوجوان با آن آشنایی قبلی داشته اند، توجه آنها را جلب می کند، بنابراین می توان یک مطلب را که لزوما تکرار می شود، هر بار با استفاده از روش جدید، وسایلی جدید و یا زمینهای تازه مطرح ساخت (شهرآرای، ۱۳۷۲، ص ۵۵).
7- در هنگام آموزش به همه ی دانش آموزان نگاه کنید و از طریق ارتباط کلامی و غیرکلامی، شرکت دادن آنها در مباحث کلاس، سوال و جواب کردن و استفاده از روش های تشویقی توجه آنها را به مواد درسی جلب نمایید.
8 – ابتدا زمینه سازی نموده و توجه دانش آموزان را جل نمایید، آنگاه تدریس خود را شروع کنید.
9 – دانش آموزانی را که دامنه ی توجه کمتری داشته و بیشتر حواسشان پرت می شود، در جلوی کلاس بنشانید تا از طریق ارتباط کلامی و غیرکلامی بیش تر با آنها، کم تر حواسشان پرت شود.
10– برای جلب توجه بیشتر دانش آموزان، می توان از آنها خواست که در انتهای جلسه ی درس، موضوع های مهم را بازگو کنند.
11– هنگام تدریس از ایجاد عوامل مخل توجه خودداری شود.
12 – خبرهای ناراحت کننده و هیجان آور را همیشه در پایان ساعات کلاس به اطلاع دانش آموزان برسانید.
13 – برای شروع کار جدید اجازه دهید تا دانش آموزان کار قبلی خود را به پایان برسانند، چون ممکن است توجه آنان به کار ناتمام معطوف باشد.
14– سعی کنید قبل از بیان مطالب درسی تا حد امکان معلومات قبلی دانش آموزان را درباره ی مطلب مورد نظر در ذهنشان روشن سازید.
15– بالاخره، یکی از دلایل کم توجهی با بی توجهی دانش آموزان، پایین بودن سطح انگیزش و علاقه ی آنهاست، لذا از  کلیه روش های ایجاد انگیزه در دانش آموزان که قبلا مورد بحث قرار استفاده کنید.

روش های تقویت توجه در کلاس

۱- هر روش عینی که کودکان بتوانند برای متمرکز ساختن توجه خود به کار برند در این سن مفید است. برای مثال، دانش آموزان می توانند در حالی که خودشان یا سایر دانش آموزان یا معلم، متنی را بلند می خوانند، از انگشت یا قلم خود برای دنبال کردن متن استفاده کنند. در همه ی موضوعات درسی می توان به دانش آموزان گفت با استفاده از انگشت به بخشی از صفحه که مربوط به توضیح یا درس معلم است، اشاره کنند. برخی اوقات ممکن است معلمان دانش آموزان بخواهند که اطلاعات مهم را با مداد یا قلم علامت گذاری کنند.

۵- در جریان بحث های گروهی فرصت های بی شماری برای معلم پدید می آید که توجه گزینشی را تشویق کند. برای مثال، در جریان بحث گروهی درباره ی هر موضوعی معلم می تواند کودکان را تشویق کند دست خود را بالا برده ، درباره ی آن موضوع اطلاعات یا عباراتی را بیان دارند.البته، قبل از آن که کودکان بتوانند نظر خود را ابراز دارند باید ابتدا خلاصه ی آنچه را کودک قبلی گفته است، تکرار کنند.

6- معلمان میتوانند برای آنکه کودکان را به گوش دادن گزینشی به صداهای خاص تشویق کنند از آنها بخواهند چشم های خود را ببندند ساکت باشند و به همه ی صداهای داخل کلاس گوش کنند. معلم پس از یک دقیقه از دانش آموزان میخواهد چشمان خود را باز کنند و همه صداهایی که شنیده اند نام ببرند. معلم می تواند صدا ها را روی تخته نوشته و تناسب آنها را با نحوه تنظیم کلاس بحث کنند.
