زندگی پر از چالش ها،استرس ها،و مشکلاتی است که باید حل شوند.هیجان ها به عنوان راه حل هایی برای این چالش ها،استرس ها،و مشکلات وجود دارند.

هیجان ها با هماهنگ کردن احساسات،انگیختگی،هدف، و بیانگری وضعیت ما را در ارتباط با محیط مان تثبیت می کنند و ما را به پاسخ های اختصاصی و کارآمدی مجهز می کنند که با مسائل بقای جسمانی و اجتماعی متناسب هستند.

هیجان

برخی اعتقاد دارند که هیجان ها هیچ هدف مفیدی ندارند.به نظر آن ها،هیجان ها فعالیت جاری را مختل می کنند،رفتار را آشفته می کنند،عقل و منطق را از ما می گیرند.

این پژوهشگران هیجان معتقدند که هیجان ها هزاران سال قبل وظایف تکاملی مهمی داشتند اما در دنیای مدرن امروز،دیگر این وظیفه را ندارند.این موضع،با این اظهار نظر که هیجان ها قبل از رفتار واقع می شوند تا به سازگاری با شرایطی که مواجه می شویم کمک کنند،در تضادی آشکار قرار دارد.همه قبول دارند که هیجان ها بر نحوه ای که فکر،احساس،و رفتار می کنیم،تاثیر دارند.بنابراین،مسئله این است که آیا هیجان ها سازگارانه و کارکردی هستند یا ناسازگارانه و غیر کارکردی.

علت اینکه هر دو جناح مسئله((کارکردی در برابر غیر کارکردی)) معنی دارند این است که هر دو درست هستند.هیجان ها هم شاهکار طرح تکاملی هستند(آنگونه که نظریه پردازان هیجان اشاره دارند) و هم در عصر عقل و خرد،بار و بنه ی اضافی هستند.

هیجان انسان در قالب طرح دو سیستمی عمل می کند.جنبه ی زیستی سیستم هیجان،جنبه ای است که انسان ها با سایر حیوانات در آن سهیم اند،و آن بخشی از سیستم هیجان است که برای حل کردن تکالیف اساسی زندگی تکامل یافته است.چون تعداد کمی از تکالیف واقعاً اساسی هستند، سیستم هیجان به صورت قالبی پاسخ می دهد که پاسخ های محدود،اما بسیار مناسبی را بسیج و هماهنگ می کند.در صورتی که شرایط مناسب باشد،این شیوه های پاسخ دهی خودکار به مسائل،می توانند  بسیار سازگارانه باشند.اما اگر این شیوه های پاسخ دهی در شرایط دیگری فعال شوند،می توانند نامناسب باشند(برای مثال،حمله کردن به یک حریف،همیشه بهترین راه برخورد کردن با موقعیت نیست).برای اینکه هیجان ها در موقعیت های متفاوت،سازگارانه باشند،باید تنظیم و کنترل شوند.به طوری که رابرت لیونسون خاطر نشان می سازد،در دنیای مدرن،ببر ها به ندرت به ما حمله می کنند.تهدیدهای امروزی در مقیاس کوچکتر هستند و بنابراین به بسیج تمام عیار سیستم هیجان ما نیازی ندارند.با کفایت شدن در تنظیم کردن هیجان ها،در اثر تجربه صورت می گیرد و وظیفه ای دائمی است.در پایان ، اینکه آیا هیجان ها به ما خدمت می کنند یا نه،بستگی دارد به اینکه چگونه کمی توامیم سیستم هیجان خود را طوری تنظیم کنیم که تنظیم هیجان،نه تنظیم شدن توسط هیجان را تجربه کنیم.
