غم منفی ترین و آزار دهنده ترین هیجان است.غم اصولاً از تجربیات جدایی یا شکست ناشی می شود.جدایی از دست دادن فردی عزیز از طریق مرگ،طلاق،شرایط(مثل مسافرت)،یا مشاجره_ناراحت کننده است.علاوه بر جدا شدن از افرادی که آن ها را دوست داریم،جدایی از مکان(وطن)،شغل یا مکان دلخواه نیز مارا غمگین می کند.شکست نیز به غم می انجامد،مثل رد شدن در امتحان،باختن مسابقه،یا نپذیرفته شدن برای عضویت در گروه.حتی شکست خارج از کنترل ارادی فرد،مثلاً در جنگ،بیماری،تصادفات و رکود اقتصادی،می تواند غم انگیز باشد.

چون غم خیلی ناخوشایند احساس می شود،فرد را با انگیزه می کند تا قبل از وقوع دوباره ی آن،هرکار لازم را برای کاهش دادن شرایط غم انگیز،انجام دهد.غم انسان را باانگیزه می کند تا محیط را به وضعیت قبل از غم انگیزی برگرداند.بعد از جدایی،همسر رد شده پوزش می خواهد،گل می فرستد،یا تلفن می زند تا از این راه،رابطه ی قطع شده را ترمیم کند.ورزشکار بعد از باخت،تمرین می کند تا اعتماد به نفس خود را برگرداند و از وقوع دوباره ی شکست مشابه جلوگیری کند.یعنی،چون احساس غمگینی می کنیم،خود را برگرداند و از وقوع دوباره ی شکست مشابه جلوگیری کند.یعنی،چون احساس غمگینی می کنیم،به احتمال بیشتری پوزش می خواهیم و قول جبران می دهیم.متاسفانه،خیلی از جدایی ها و شکست ها را نمی توان جبران کرد.انسان در حالت نا امیدی،به صورت فعال و نیرومند رفتار نمی کند،بلکه به صورت غیر فعال و بی حال رفتار می نماید که اصولاً به پس کشیدن می انجامد.

یکی از جنبه های مثبت احساس غم این است که به صورت غیر مستقیم به انسجام گروه های اجتماعی کمک می کند.چون جدایی از افراد عزیز موجب غم می شود و به خاطر اینکه غم احساس ناراحت کننده ای است،پیش بینی آن افراد را باانگیزه می کند تا با عزیزانشان منسجم بمانند.اگر افراد دلشان برای دیگران تنگ نمی شد،انگیزه ی چندانی نداشتند تا برای حفظ کرن انسجام اجتماعی،هرکاری از دستشان برآید انجام دهند.همین طور،اگر دانشجو یا ورزشکار،احتمال اندوه ناشی از شکست را پیش بینی نمی کرد،برای آماده شدن و تمرین کردن،انگیزه ی چندانی نداشت.بنابراین در حالی که  احساس غم ناخوشایند احساس می شود،می تواند رفتار های ثمربخش را باانگیزه و حفظ کند.
