کودکان نیازمند توجه هستند: نقش پاداش و تحسین
همه ی ما با تعریف و تمجید پیشرفت می کنیم. این مسئله، احساس خوبی در ما به وجود می آورد. به یاد دارم که در یک کلاس آیروبیک تمرین بدنی با هدف تقویت قلب و ریه ها دست کم بیست از سالمند در سالن حضور داشتند که همگی ناراحت بودند و نفس نفس میزدند. من سعی میکردم تا آنجا که ممکن است بدن خود را خم کنم و توانایی خود را نشان دهم، در همین لحظه شنیدم که مربی گفت: “خوب است؟ عالی است”، خطاب او به همه ی گروه بود، اما من نتوانستم از احساس خوشحالی تمسخرآمیز خودم خودداری کنم و تعریف و تمجید او را بازتابی مثبت و شخصی از تلاش خودم تعبیر کردم. روی هایرژلی ، نویسنده و عضو حزب کارگر پارلمان اخیرا در ضمیمه ی آموزشی تایمز چیزی مشابه این نوشت. او از بهترین معلم و نخستین سال وحشتناک خود در دبیرستان یاد کرده و لحظه ای مهم را ذکر کرده که حتی حالا نیز آن را به خاطر دارد. او چنین تعریف می کند: «اما در سال نخست من یک لحظه ی بزرگ داشتم. ما در زمین فوتبال، مشغول بازی بودیم و درک واکر که آنجا ایستاده بود، از بچه ها پرسید: «برای متوقف کردن مهاجم سریع چه کار باید بکنیم؟» و من به سرعت گفتم: «تکل بزنیم.» و او گفت: “کاملا درسته! صحیح است!” و حتی حالا، وقتی که این داستان را تعریف میکنم و می دانم که دارم فخرفروشی می کنم، ولی باز هم تبلور همان غرور را در وجودم احساس می کنم.»
چرا تشویق و تحسین مهم است؟

کودکان از تشویق و تحسین خوششان می آید. یکی از مایه های شادی و کار کردن با کودکان مشاهده ی خشنودی و غرور بی اختیار و آزادانه در چهره ی آنها، در زمانی است که در کاری موفق می شوند، و ما نشان می دهیم که متوجه موفقیت آنان شده ایم. تقریبا در مورد همه ی کودکان، این موضوع مصداق دارد که تحسین، انگیزش و تشویق، خیلی بیشتر از تشیید رفتاری را در کودک به وجود بیاورد که بزرگسالان خواهان آن هستند. احتمالا بیشتر افراد متوجه این نکته شده اند که تحسین و تشویق _ یا حتی وعده ی آن_ در مقایسه با تنبیه و تحقیر، اثرات بهتری به بار می آورد. علاوه بر این، به نظر می رسد بسیار بجا است که در عین حال و خطاهای کودک نیز باشیم.

کودکان به چیزی بیشتر از توصیف و تمجیدی که صرفا باعث لذت می شود احتیاج دارند تا به انگیزه و شوق برسند، تشویق و تمجید چیزی ظاهری و اضافی، مانند مخلوط خاک قند و سفیده ی تخم مرغ برای روی شیرینی و کیک، نیست. بلکه واقعا بعضی از نیازهای اساسی را برطرف می سازد. کودکان، همانطور که باید به طرز مناسبی تغذیه شوند و لباس بپوشند، نیاز دارند که:
– کسی برای آنها اهمیت و احترام قائل شود. باور کنند که کسی، نسبت به آنان متعهد است و به اندازه کافی دلسوز آنهاست و در فکر شادی آنهاست. آنان نیازمند توجه هستند و باید احساس کنند دوست داشتنی هستند.
– آنان باید به صورتی روشن و مثبت، راهنمایی بشوند تا بدانند که چگونه باید زندگی خود را اداره کنند. آنان نیاز به این دارند که بدانند چه کاری را باید انجام دهند، نه اینکه چه کاری را نباید انجام دهند.
– باید خشنود و راضی باشند و دیگران به ویژه والدین خود را شاد کنند. آنان نیاز دارند بشنوند که موجب خوشحالی والدینشان شده اند، و دوست دارند سعی و تلاش زیاد آنها مورد توجه والدینشان قرار بگیرد.
ستودن و تشویق کردن، پاداش دادن، در آغوش کشیدن، لبخند زدن و دست دادن، این نیازها را تحقق می بخشند، واکنش های دیگری از سوی والدین که نتایجی مشابه دارد عبارتند از: حمایت، توجد، قدردانی، و ابراز امتنان. ما می توانیم با بیش از یک روش، قدردانی و امتنان خود را نشان دهیم، رفتار آنان را استحکام بخشیم و دلگرمشان کنیم. می توانیم قدردانی و تشکر خود را به صورت های زیر نشان دهیم: 
– با کلمات
– به طور جسمی
– با صرف وقت و توجه

– با هدایا

کودکانی که به آنها بی اعتنایی و بی توجهی میشود، نمی توانند حس کنند که دوستشان دارند و عزیز شمرده می شون، زیرا مورد توجه قرار نمیگرند. کودکانی که تنها هنگامی وجودشان احساس می شود که مورد انتقاد باشند و کسی به آنان توپ و نشر بزند و بازخواستشان کند احساس کنند که هیچ کس شادشان نمی کند، فقط پیام هایی منفی درباره ی رفتار خود می شنوند. آنها یاد می گیرند که چه کاری را نباید انجام دهند، یا دلیل آن چیست. در واقع، اگر والدین همواره به کودکان بی اعتنایی کنند، آنان نیز  دلیلی بر خوب بودن خود نمی بینند زیرا به احتمال زیاد، خوب بودن آنها نیز مورد توجه والدین قرار نخواهد گرفت. برای بسیاری از مردم سخت است که از فرزند خود تعریف کنند. بعضی ها نمی دانند که چه تعریف یا تحسینی از او بکنند. برخی دیگر از ابراز تعریف و تمجید احساس ناراحتی می کنند. عده ای دیگر نیز از تحسین کردن کودک خود اکراه دارند، چون معتقدند:
– تعریف و تمجید کودکشان را پر مدعا و از خودراضی خواهد کرد.
– فقط زمانی باید از کودک تعریف شود که کاری برجسته و دور از انتظار انجام داده باشد.
– رفتار و کار عادی، شایسته ی اظهار نظر بخصوصی نیست.
– اگر چیزی بتواند بهتر شود، نباید مورد تحسین قرار گیرد.
– پیش از آنکه بابت یکه تکلیف، از کودک تعریف و تحسینی به عمل آید، او باید در هر حوزه ای موفق شود، در غیر این صورت ممکن است تصور کند که همه چیز رضایت بخش است و زمانی که لازم است به اصلاح برخی عملکردهای خود بپردازد، کوتاهی کند.
– پدر و مادر، خودشان عمدتا با فراهم آوردن امکانات، و اعمال انضباطی عادی و مانند اینها، مسئول موفقیت کودک بوده اند.
– انضباط آنها نتیجه بخش نبوده است: کودک آن را نمی پذیرد یا پاسخ نمی دهد، بنابراین والدین تسلیم می شوند.
این واکنش ها بسیار عمومیت دارند. اگر ما درک خود را از آنچه می تواند تمجید شمرده شود یا باید به صورت تعریف از کودک درآید، و این مسئله را که چرا این تحسین برای کودک منافعی در بر دارد، گسترش دهیم، پی خواهیم برد که به کارگیری آن در بیشتر مواقع بسیار آسان است.
درک معنای تعریف یا تحسین

تعریف و تمجید تقریبا به معنای نشان دادن توجه و قدردانی است، نه قضاوت و تأیید مشروط. اشخاص بسیاری بر این باور هستند که تمجید تقریبا مثل این است که به کودک بگویید او «خوب» است، که مستلزم قضاوت کردن است. کار یا رفتاری مورد قضاوت قرار می گیرد که یا خوب و شایسته ی تمجید، یا بد و شایسته ی انتقاد است. اما  کودکان دوست ندارند همیشه تحت نظارت، داوری و ارزیابی باشند. آنان آزادی ای بیشتر از آنچه طیق روش بالا گفته شد، می خواهند. کودکان با تعریف و تحسین شکوفا می شوند، نه فقط برای اینکه تصور کنند باید باید خوب بشوند، بلکه بدین معنا که تلاش های آنان مورد توجه بوده و کسی در این باره اندیشیده که آنان شایان اهمیت هستند و باید به اندازه ی کافی مورد توجه قرار گیرند. واژه ها و کلماتی را که ما در بیان تحسین یا تعریف به کار می بریم و زمانی را که به این کار اختصاص می دهیم، بازتاب توجه و قدرشناسی ماست، نه داوری و تأیید اتفاقی ما.

تحسین، برای تقویت روحیه و واکنش صحیح هم اعمال می شود. خیلی ها تصیور می کنند که تحسین، همیشه خوب یا مثبت، و عیبجویی همیشه منفی و زیان آور است. آنان کامیابی ها را جشن می گیرند و غالبا در آن اغراق می کنند و اشتباهات را نادیده می گیرند. این بی فایده است. چیزی که مورد نیاز کودکان است، واکنش ریاکارانه نیست بلکه اطلاعاتی صحیح و دقیق درباره ی نقاط قوت و ضعف کار آنان است تا موجب بهتر شدن و تشویق آنان در جهت قبول مسئولیت برای بهتر کار کردن شود و کمکشان کند تا خود را ارزیابی کنند. به تحسین و عیبجویی نباید با دید مثبت یا منفی نگریست، بلکه باید از نظر سازنده یا غیرسازنده بودن، به آنها نگاه کرد. انتقاد یا عیبجویی ممکن است سازنده باشد زمانی که راه به سوی آینده را نشان می دهد و تحسین و تمجید ممکن است غیرسازنده باشد، مثلا، وقتی خیلی کلی باشد، غیرواقعی یا دروغین باشد، یا زمانی که معیارهایی را تعیین کند که رعایت آنها بسیار دشوار است.
چه چیزی را می توانیم تحسین کنیم؟
به همان اندازه که مهارت های تحصیلی کودکان را تحسین می کنیم، می توانیم:
– به جای کیفیت محصول نهایی (نتیجه)، تلاش و کوششی را که صرف چیزی می کنند (فرایند کار) را تحسین کنیم.
– مهارتهای فکری، از قبیل تصمیم گیری ها، اندیشه ها و عقاید، استفاده از قدرت تخیل، حل کردن مسائل، پیشاپیش فکر کردن و رفع ابهام را تحسین کنیم.
– مهارتهای اجتماعی، مانند سودمند بودن، استقلال، فهم، مهربانی، مشارکت در کارها و حل کردن تعارض ها را تحسین کنیم.
– مهارت های جسمی، مانند تبحر داشتن در کار با قیچی، مهارت های ورزشی، یا ساخت و ساز موفقیت آمیز اشیا را تحسین کنیم. 
زبان تحسین و تمجید
تحسین می تواند به معنای هر دو واژه ی تایید و قدرشناسی باشد. در فرهنگ لغات،  ” تأییده ” به معنای پذیرفتن، صحه نهادن و ستودن است. ” قدرشناسی” به معنای تعیین ارزش، کیفیت یا مقدار چیزی، همچنین حساس بودن به چیزی، و احترام زیاد قائل شدن برای آن است. به عبارت دیگر، ” تایید” به معنای پذیرش قلبی و صمیمانه ی شخص یا کاری است که آن شخص انجام داده است، بدون قیاس یا سنجیدن دلیل قابل پذیرش بودن آن.  قدرشناسی نیز به معنای ارزیابی و سبک و سنگین کردن چیزی، یا عملکرد کسی، و بررسی کیفیت های مختلف آن چیز یا کس (به ویژه تلاش او) است. کودکان نیاز دارند احساس کنند که مورد تایید کسی قرار گرفته اند که از آنان بابت، مهارتها و تلاش ها و پیشرفتشان قدردانی می کند. ما می توانیم با گفتن چیزهایی از قبیل: عالی است، فوق العاده است، بی نظیر است، آفرین، رضایت خودمان را نشان دهیم.
مؤثرترین شیوه وقتی است که رو در رو، با لبان خندان و چشمان شاد، و با یک حرکت اضافی سر و دست – ضربه زدن یا نشان دادن علامت پیروزی – به ابراز تحسین می پردازیم.
می توانیم بابت کاری که کودک انجام داده است، با گفتن چیزهایی از قبیل: «از این کاری که کردی متشکرم…» «واقعأ کمکی به من بوده و تو زمان و توجه زیادی صرف آن کردی»، قدردانی خودمان را نشان دهیم.
اگر تحسین کودک به شکل صریح و دقیق انجام گیرد، به او کمک می کند. یعنی شرح یک موضوع با ذکر جزئیات:
– ثابت می کند که شما توجه داشته اید.
– موجب واکنشی مناسب میشود.
– کمک می کند تا از قضاوت غير لازم و نادرست خودداری کنید.
عصاره ی تحسین سازنده، اطلاعات و تشویقی است که نه ساختگی و دروغین است و نه نادرست، با جزئیات انجام میگیرد و با چشم اندازی به آینده انجام می شود. تحسین باید فضای کافی در اختیار کودک بگذارد تا درباره ی خودش قضاوت کند.
اصول ده گانه ی تعریف و تمجید سازنده
1- کردار و عملکرد او را مورد تحسین قرار دهید نه خودش را.
کودکان نیاز دارند که به خاطر همان چیزی که هستند، صرف نظر از آنچه می توانند انجام دهند، مورد تایید و پذیرش قرار گیرند. اگر والدین تنها زمانی که کودکشان استعداد و شایستگی از خود نشان می دهد، او را قبول و تایید کنند، آنگاه رسیدن به کمال، برای کودک به کاری یکنواخت و کسل کننده تبدیل می شود.
2- فرایند (سعی و تلاش) را مورد تحسین قرار دهید نه محصول کارش را.
 وقتی کودکان کوچک هستند، فرایند آزمودن برای آنها حیاتی و بسیار مهم است. آنان نمی توانند بطور کامل و شایسته بنویسند، نقاشی کنند یا ریاضیات را درک کنند. در آغاز کار، آنچه تولید می کنند، کمتر از فرایند یادگیری اهمیت دارد. اما، بعدها. نتيجه ی کارشان هم اهمیت پیدا خواهد کرد. بنابراین اگر در آغاز، چیزی اشتباه است یا به قدر کافی خوب نیست، کم و بیش همان است که هست. انتقاد سازنده، راه پیش رفتن را که کودک تا آن نقطه به عمل آورده، مورد تقدیر و تمجید قرار می دهد. 
3- عملکرد مشخصی را مورد تمجید قرار دهید.
با ذکر جزئیات شرح دهید کجای کاری که کودک انجام داده خوشحال کننده است، به طوری که کودک بداند چه کاری را به طرز صحیح انجام نداده است و مجددا چه کار باید بکند.
4- کودک را با صراحت و بدون اما و اگر و گوشه و کنایه، مورد تحسین قرار دهید.
برای گرفتن بهترین نتیجه، تمجید و تحسین باید رک و صریح ابراز شود، بدون اما و اگر، و گوشه و کنایه درباره ی شکست های گذشته یا تضعیف کردن نتیجه. حرفهایی مثل “خوب عمل کردی” یا ” مشق امشبت خوب است”. 
5- تعریف و تمجید باید واقعی و صادقانه باشد.
 همانطور که در مورد بزرگسالان صدق می کند، تمجید دروغین از کودک، نوعی اهانت ناخوشایند به او محسوب می شود. تمجید دروغین، خودآگاهی کودک را زایل می کند. اعتماد او را به پدر و مادر ( یا هر فرد بزرگسال دیگر) از بین می برد و ممکن است ترس از شکست را در او افزایش دهد.
 
6- تمجید را به صورت خودانگیخته ابراز کنید.
تعریف و تمجید را بدون فوت وقت به زبان بیاورید نه پس از تعمق و اندیشه. آن را در حضور کودک بگویید، نه آنکه از او دور شوید یا از اتاق دیگری بگویید؛ طوری باشد که او بتواند طرز گفتن شما را ببیند.
7- روش های فیزیکی را فراموش نکنید.
تماس بدنی و حالت چهره نیز می تواند بیانگر تحسین باشد. در آغوش کشیدن، لبخند زدن، بوسیدن، مهم است. این کارها بیانگر محبت و قدردانی هستند، کمتر جنبه ی قضاوت دارند و بیشتر از بیان شفاهی، حالت خودانگیخته دارند.
8- پیشرفتهای مقطعی کودک را نیز مورد تمجید قرار دهید.
پیشرفت کودک را در هر مرحله، شایسته تعریف و تمجید بدانید. از این طریق، کودک احساس آرامش می کند.
9- بگذارید کودک موفقیت را از آن خود بداند.
