با فرض اینکه اکثر بیماران مبتلا به بی خوابی ذهن آشفته شان را علت اصلی مشکلات خوابشان می دانند به نظر میرسد که تلاش برای پیشگیری، تعدیل و یا فرونشانی افکاری که از نظر آنها با خوابشان تداخل می کند اجتناب ناپذیر است. اثرات جانبی فرونشانی فکر، در سبب شناسی و تداوم افکار مزاحم موثر هستند. وگنر با بیان اینکه سطح کنترل ذهنی افراد حاصل تعامل فرایندهای نظارت و حواس پرتی است، اثرات زیان بار فرونشانی فکر را گزارش داد. نظریه فرایند جانبی بیان می کند که تلاش برای فرونشانی شامل 1) یک فرایند حواس پرتی است توجه را به افکار دیگری غیر از افکار ناخواسته هدایت می کند و 2) یک فرایند نظارت است که در جست و جوی شکست در دستیابی به یک وضعیت مطلوب است. در بسیاری از شرایط این دو فرایند با هم برای فرونشانی موفقیت آمیز تعامل می کنند. به این حال موقعیت هایی وجود دارد که تعادل از بین میرود و باعث می شود که افکار ناخواسته وارد آگاهی شوند.

به عقیده ی وگنر، اولا به دلیل اینکه فرایند نظارت نیاز به تلاش شناختی کمتری دارد اثرات جانبی در شرایط انتظار شناختی به آسانی مشاهده خواهند شد. ثانیا فرایندهای حواس پرتی و نظارت هر دو می توانند به صورت جست و جوی مثبت( جست و جوی وجود هدف) یا جست وجوی منفی( جست و جوی نبودن هدف) باشند. واضح است که جست و جوی منفی از مثبت سخت تر است. تکلیفی که شامل جست و جوی منفی برخی افکار است، احتمالا موفقیت آمیز نخواهد بود. برعکس، تکلیفی که شامل پرت کردن حواس از یک فکر به فکر جایگزین دیگری است ممکن است موفقیت آمیز باشد. سه پژوهش بعدی، اهمیت این نظریه را در خواب و بی خوابی نشان می دهد.

آنسفیلد،وگنر و بروزر از افرادی که خواب خوبی داشتند خواستند که هر چه سریعتر بخوابند، و به گروه دیگر گفتند هرگاه می خواهند بخوابند به علاوه شرکت کنندگان در شرایط انتظار شناختی زیاد ( گوش کردن به موسیقی نظامی) و کم ( موسیقی نسل جدید) قرار گرفتند. گروهی که به آنها تکلیف شناختی بیشتری داده شده بود ( انتظار بالا+ درخواست برای هر چه سریع تر خوابیدن) بیشترین مشکل را در خوابیدن داشتند. در پژوهش دیگری از افرادی که خواب خوبی داشتند و افراد مبتلا به بی خوابی خواسته شد هنگام خوابیدن یک مسئله ذهنی را فرونشانی کنند و از گروه دیگر خواستندکه این کار را نکنند. در شب پژوهش شرکت کنندگانی که به آنها گفته شده بود فرونشانی کنند گزارش دادند که دیرتر به خواب رفتند و کیفیت خوابشان را در مقایسه با شرکت کنندگانی که به آنها دستور فرونشانی داده نشده بود، ضعیف تر ارزیابی کردند. این یافته ها بیان میکند که تلاش برای فرونشانی یک فکر، به طور معکوس هم بر 1) نهفتگی خواب خود گزارش شده 2) و هم بر کیفیت خواب تاثیر می گذارد. این تاثیر در هر دو گروه افراد مبتلا به بی خوابی و هم افرادی که خواب خوبی داشتند نمایان شد. برخلاف پژوهش قبلی ( وگنر )، فراوانی افکار فرونشانده شده افزایش نیافت. هر چند توضیحات متعددی ممکن برای این مسئله وجود داشته باشد، یک توضیح احتمالی، توجه محدود به دستورهای فرونشانی فکر است. در این پژوهش، از شرکت کنندگان خواسته شده بود تا تنها یک مشکل/ مسئله فکری را انتخاب و فرونشانی کنند و مقیاس فراوانی فکر فقط فراوانی این مشکل/مسئله ذهنی را اندازه گرفت. ممکن است که شرکت کنندگان به طور موفقیت آمیز یک مشکل/ مسئله فکری را به وسیله ی فکر کردن به یک مشکل / مسئله دیگر فرونشانی کنند. پژوهش های بعدی باید از شرکت کنندگان بخواهد تا دامنه وسیعی از افکار را فروبنشانند و همه فعالیت های شناختی قبل از خواب را بسنجد.

همچنان که قبلا گفته شد، دستور حواسپرتی با استفاده از تصویرسازی ذهنی، به سریع تر خواب رفتن و گزارش فعالیت شناختی کمتر، قبل از خواب منجر شد. یکی از دلایل این امر این است که از افراد مبتلا به بی خوابی میخواهد که به یک فعایت مثبت ( تصویرسازی سرگرم کننده و جالب) بپردازند. مطابق نظریه وگنر، جست و جوی ویژگی های مثبت باید با کاهش افکار مزاحم و در نتیجه، زمان کمتر برای خواب رفتن مرتبط باشد. همگام با این پیش بینی، در شب آزمایش، ( گروه عامل حواسپرتی ذهنی) زمان کمتری برای خواب رفتن گزارش کردند و افکار و نگرانی های قبل از خوابشان را نیز در مقایسه با هر دو گروه کنترل، کمتر پریشان کننده و ناخوشایند توصیف کردند. نتایج نشان میدهد که جست وجوی مثبت، شروع خواب را تسهیل می کند و ناراحتی ناشی از افکار مزاحم را کاهش میدهد. از آنجا که فرونشانی فکر تنها یکی از راهبردهایی است افراد ممکن است در تلاش برای کنترل افکار ناخواسته استفاده کنند، پژوهش های آینده باید اثر تلاش برای کنترل ذهنی از طریق دامنه وسیع تری از راهبردها را اندازه گیری کند. در تلاش برای انجام چنین آزمایشهایی، پرسش نامه فکر( TCQ)، طراحی شده به وسیله ولز و دیویس برای استفاده در بیماران مبتلا به بی خوابی، تعدیل شده است. نتایج نشان داد شرکت کنندگان مبتلا به بی خوابی در مقایسه با افرادی که خواب خوبی داشتند از فرونشانی، ارزیابی دوباره و نگرانی، به طور معناداری بیشتر استفاده می کردند. استفاده از فرونشانی فکر با یکی از پژوهش های تجربی که قبلا بحث شد هماهنگ است. هرچند ارزیابی دوباره ممکن است یک راهبرد پویای موثر برای حل مشکلات و نگرانی ها در طی روز باشد اما درگیری در فرایندهای مشابه در شب ممکن است در شروع خواب تداخل ایجاد کند. یافته های مرتبط با نگرانی با پژوهش های قبلی که نشان می داد افراد مبتلا به بی خوابی به طور خاص به نگرانی و روان رنجورخویی آسیب پذیر هستند، همسان است. شواهد ابتدایی نشان میدهد راهبرد کنترل اجتماعی و جایگزینی ممکن است در کنترل افکار ناخواسته موثر باشد.
