همه افراد زمانی غم و اندوه را تجربه کرده اند اما افسردگی چیزی بیشتر است. افسردگی غم و اندوه افراطی است که بیش از چند روز طول می کشد. افسردگی فعالیت های روزمره را مختل می کند و حتی می تواند باعث درد فیزیکی شود. خوشبختانه افسردگی بسیار قابل درمان است.

افسردگی،  یکی از رایج ترین اختلالات روان در ایالات متحده است. طبق گفته موسسه ملی سلامت روان (NIMH)، در سال 2014، حدود 15.7 میلیون بزرگسال در ایالات متحده – حدود 6.7 درصد از بزرگسالان ایالات متحده – حداقل یک دوره عمده افسردگی را تجربه کرده اند.

ویژگی اصلی اختلال افسردگی اساسی وجود یک دوره حداقل دو هفته ای است که در طی آن یا خلق افسرده یا فقدان یا لذات در تقریبا تمام فعالیت ها دیده می شود. علاوه بر ملاک های ذکر شده فرد افسرده باید حداقل چهار علامت از فهرست علائم ذکر شده را داشته باشد که شامل تغییرت اشتها یا وزن، خواب و فعالیت های روانی_ حرکتی، کاهش انرژی، احساس بی ارزشی یا گناه، مشکلات تفکر، تمرکز یا تصمیم گیری، یا افکار مکرر مرگ یا افکار خودکشی یا طرح خودکشی یا اقدام به آن است.

نکاتی درباره اختلال افسردگی:

  • برای اینکه علامتی به عنوان علامت اختلال افسردگی اساسی محسوب شود باید به تازگی بروز کرده باشد یا باید نسبت به زمان قبل از بروز بیماری فرد تغییر محسوس مشاهده گردد.
  • علایم باید در اکثر اوقات روز و تقریبا تمام روزها برای حداقل دو هفته متوالی ادامه داشته باشد
  • دوره افسردگی موجود باید از نظر بالینی موجب ناراحتی چشمگیر یا افت کارکرد شغلی، اجتماعی و سایر جنبه های مهم کارکردی فرد گردد.در برخی از افرادی که دچار افسردگی خفیف هستند کارکرد فرد البته با تقلای زیاد طبیعی است.
  • معمولا در دوره های افسردگی اساسی فرد خلق خود را به شکل افسرده، غمگین، ناامید، مایوس یا ناشاد ذکر می کند.
  • برخی از افراد افسرده از کسالت، نداشتن احساس یا احساس اضطراب شکایت دارند.
  • برخی از افراد افسرده بیشتر از آنکه از خلق افسرده شکایت داشته باشند، مشکلات جسمی را مطرح می کند( مانند کوفتگی بدن و درد).
  •  علایم دیگر اختلال افسردگی می توان تشدید تحریک پذیری را عنوان نمود( مثلا خشم مداوم، تمایل به ابرز عصبانیت در واکنش به وقایع یا سرزنش دیگرا، احساس درماندگی شدید در برابر مشکلات جزیی).
  • از دست دادن علایق یا لذات به درجات متفاوت در اکثر قریب به اتفاق بیماران مشاهده می شود.
  • در اکثر موارد انزوای اجتماعی یا بی تفاوتی فرد به فعالیت های لذت بخش از دید اعضای خانواده پنهان نمی ماند و از آن شکایت می کند.
  • در برخی از افراد کاهش شدید میل و فعالیت جنسی مشاهده می شود.
  • خستگی، کاهش انرژی و احساس ضعف شایع است.
  • احساس بی ارزشی یا گناه که طی دوره افسردگی اساسی مشاهده می شود معمولا به صورت ارزیای غیرواقع بینانه منفی ارزش خویشتن یا مشغولیت ذهنی با گناه یا نشخوار ذهن در مورد خطاهایی جزیی گذشته بروز می کند.
