سوء استفاده از کودک می تواند سالها برای سلامت روان او مشکل ایجاد کند. طبق آمار وزارت بهداشت و خدمات انسانی ایالات متحده در سال 2006 حدود 905/000 کودک آمریکایی در همان سال بدرفتاری شده بودند که 16 درصد آنها مورد آزار و اذیت فیزیکی قرار داشتند.
تعرض به کودک چیست؟ آسیب های غیرتصادفی یا آسیب های جسمی مثل مشت زدن،ضرب و شتم،لگد زدن،گزش،سوزش یا دیگر موارد آسیب رساندن به یک کودک است. در یک برنامه ی تلویزیونی نشان داده شد که مادری برای مجازات فرزندش از روش های تنبیهی استفاده کرد مثل نگه داشتن سس تند در دهانش و گرفتن دوش آب سرد برای اینکه فرزندش دروغ گفت و او ادعا کرد که راهی بهتر از این برای کنترل فرزندش نتوانست پیدا کند. بسیاری از والدین آگاه نیستند که رفتار آنها برای کودک چه ضرری دارد.
