برای آنکه احساس کنیم شایسته زندگی و سعادت هستیم باید بتوانیم بر زندگی خود مسلط باشیم و به اختیار برسیم و لازمه این مهم تمایل به قبول مسئولیت در قبال رفتار و دستیابی به هدف هاست. این بدان معناست که در قبال زندگی و سعادت خود قبول مسئولیت کنیم. قبول مسئولیت در قبال خود برای رسیدن به عزت نفس ضرورت دارد. کسی که در قبال خود قبول مسئولیت می کند نشان میدهد که از عزت نفس برخوردار است، رابطهی میان عزت نفس و ارکان تشکیل دهنده آن، رابطه ای همیشه متقابل است.
قبول مسئولیت در قبال خود مستلزم تحقق موارد زیر است:
– مسئول تحقق خواسته هایم هستم.
– مسئول انتخاب ها و اعمال خود هستم.
– مسئول میزان آگاهی هستم که در کارم وارد می کنم.
۔ مسئول میزان آگاهی هستم که به روابطم با دیگران می آورم.
– مسئول روابط خود با دیگران هستم – همکاران، مشتریان، همسر،فرزندان، دوستان.

– مستول تعیین اولویت های زندگی خود هستم.
– مسئول کیفیت ارتباطات خود با دیگران هستم.
– مسئول خوشبختی خود هستم.
– مسئول انتخاب ارزش هایی هستم که برای زندگی خود برمی گزینم.
– مسئول بالا بردن عزت نفس خود هستم.
برای روشنتر شدن مطلب به توضیحات زیر توجه کنید.
مسئولیت در قبال تحقق خواسته: جز من هیچ کس مسئولیتی در قبال تحقق امیال و خواسته های من ندارد. اگر خواسته ای دارم مسئولیت تحقق این خواسته صرفا بر دوش من است. وظیفه من است که برنامه اقدامی برای تحقق خواسته هایم تدوین کنم. اگر تحقق خواسته های من نیازمند مشارکت دیگران باشد، مسئولیت من است که بدانم آنها متقابلا از من چه انتظاری دارند، باید به علایق و منافع دیگران احترام بگذارم و بدانم که اگر همکاری و کمک آنها را می خواهم باید متقابلا خواسته ها و منافع آنها را رعایت کنم. کسی برای تحقق خواسته هایم به من مدیون نیست. اگر من نخواهم که برای تحقق خواسته هایم کاری صورت دهم باید بدانم که این ها به راستی خواسته های من نیستند.
مسئولیت در قبال انتخاب ها و اقدامات: در قبال گزینه ها و اقدامات در رفتارم مسئول هستم اگر من انتخاب کننده هستم بدون تردید مسئولیت خوب و بد انتخاب هایم نیز بر عهده من است، باید به این حقیقت توجه داشته باشم. اگر می خواهید به دلیل وجود این باور بیشتر پی ببرید جمله زیر را با شش عبارت تکمیل کنید:
اگر مسئولیت کامل انتخاب ها و رفتارم را به عهده بگیرم………….
مسئولیت در قبال آگاهی در کار:  کسی جز من در قبال آوردن آگاهی به فعالیت های روزانه ام مسئولیت ندارد. می توانم با آگاهی تمام و یا بدون آگاهی و یا جایی در حد فاصل این دو نهایت کار کنم.
مسئولیت در قبال آگاهی در روابط با دیگران: آنچه در مورد کار گفتیم در مورد رابطه با دیگران نیز مصداق دارد.
مسئولیت در قبال رفتار با دیگران: همکاران، معاشرین، مشتریان همسر، فرزندان و دوستان. من مسئول هستم که چگونه حرف می زنم و چگونه گوش می دهم. مسئولیت پایبندی یا عدم پایبندی به قول و قرارهایم با من است. مسئولیت منطقی بودن یا نبودن رفتارم با دیگران بر عهده من است وقتی دیگران را مسئول اقدامات خود معرفی میکنیم در واقع از واقعیت فرار می کنیم: «او مرا دیوانه می کند»، «سر به سرم می گذارد» «در صورتی رفتارم عقلایی می شود که او ….
مسئولیت در قبال اولویت بندی زمان: این که آیا انتخاب های من به سود من یا به زبان من است، موضوعی است که به من مربوط می شود. این که نیرو و زمان خود را صرف انجام دادن چه کارهایی بکنم موضوعی مربوط به خود من است. این که اوقاتم را صرف خانواده ام بکنم یا آن را با دوستانم بگذرانم، موضوعیست که به خود من مربوط می شود.
وقتی در جلسات آموزش مدیران از آنها خواسته شد عبارت «اگر مسئولیت در قبال اولویت بندی اوقاتم را به عهده داشته باشم…» را تکمیل کنند اغلب عباراتی از این قبیل را برای تکمیل جمله در نظر میگیرند: «اوقاتم را صرف آموختن «نه» گفتن میکنم »؛ «۳۰ درصد فعالیت های جاری خود را کنار می گذارم،» «مولدتر می شوم» «از کارم بیشتر لذت می برم،» «از امکانات بالقوه ام بیشتر استفاده می کنم.»
مسئولیت در قبال کیفیت ارتباط با دیگران: من مسئول ارتباط خود با دیگران هستم. مسئولیت این که آیا مستمع يا مستمعین حرفم را درک کرده اند بر عهده من است، مسئولیت به اندازه کافی بلند و شمرده حرف زدنم بر عهده من است.
مسئولیت در قبال سعادت خود: باور اشتباهی است اگر گمان کنم سعادت و خوشبختی ما به دست دیگران است. اشتباه است اگر گمان کنیم که تنها در صورتی می توانیم خود را دوست بداریم که دیگران ما را دوست بدارند. اشتباه است اگر گمان کنیم تنها در صورتی می توانیم خشنود باشیم که دیگران برایمان کاری صورت دهند.
جمله زیر را دست کم با شش عبارت تکمیل کنید:
اگر مسئولیت کامل در قبال سعادت و خوشبختی خود را به دست گیرم ……….
قبول مسئولیت در قبال خوشبختی، خود نیرو دهنده است. عنان زندگی ما را به دست خودمان می دهد.
مسئولیت در قبال انتخاب ارزش ها: تصمیم این که کدام ارزش را برای زندگی خود انتخاب کنیم بر عهده ماست، همان طور که مسئولیت تجدیدنظر در ارزش هایی که تاکنون پذیرفته ایم باخود ماست.
مسئولیت در قبال بالا بردن عزت نفس: عزت نفس هدیه ای نیست که آن را از دیگران قبول کنیم، عزت نفس از درون انسان نشأت می گیرد. انتظار اینکه حادثه ای روی دهد و عزت نفس مرا بالا ببرد، انتظاری بیهوده است. 
یک نکته مهم
وقتی تاکید میکنیم مسئولیت زندگی و سعادتمان بر عهده خود ماست. هرگز منظور این نیست که عوامل خارجی و حوادث و اتفاقات نمی توانند در این میان نقشی داشته باشند. این را هم نمی گوییم که هر شخصی به طور کامل اتفاقاتی است که برای او می افتد. این گفته درست نیست که مسئول همه اتفاقاتی که برای شخص می افتد د اوست. بسیاری از امور هستند که بر آن کنترلی نداریم.  اگر خود را در قبال کارهایی که بر آن اختیاری نداریم مقصر بدانیم، عزت نفس خود را به مخاطره می اندازیم. وظیفه ماست که بدانیم چه اموراتی مربوط به من است و اموراتی مربوط به من نیست. اما باید به این نکته توجه داشته باشیم که تنها آگاهی که بر آن کنترل ارادی داریم، آگاهی خود من است.
چند مثال
در محل کار و در محیط های اداری به راحتی می توان تشخیص داد که چه کسانی در قبال خود مسئولیت دارند و چه کسانی از زیر بار مسئولیت شانه خالی می کنند. کسی که در قبال خود احساس مسئولیت می کند با مسایل برخورد پویا دارد و حال آنکه دیگران برخورد انفعالی می کنند. وقتی مسئله ای بروز می کند، مردان و زنانی که در قبال خود احساس مسئولیت می کنند می پرسند :در این باره چه می توانم بکنم؟، چه اقداماتی می توانم صورت دهم؟ اگر مشکلی پیش بیاید از خود می پرسند «چه موضوعی را فراموش کردم؟ کجا محاسبه ی اشتباه داشتم؟ چگونه می توانم مسئله را اصلاح کنم؟» اشخاصی که احساس مسئولیت می کنند هرگز نمی گویند “اما کسی به من نگفت” ، ” این وظیفه من نیست.” کسی که احساس مسئولیت می کند دیگران را سرزنش نمی کند و آنها را مقصر جلوه گر نمی سازد. کسی که احساس مسئولیت می کند راه حل گر است.
در تمام سازمان ها و مؤسسات با هر دو شخصیت روبه رو می شویم: گروهی که منتظرند تا دیگران مسایل آنها را حل کنند و گروهی که مسئولیت انجام دادن کار را به عهده می گیرند. تنها در صورت حضور اشخاص از نوع دوم در سازمان هاست که به آنها امکان می دهد در کارشان به موفقیت برسند.
در نمونه هایی که در ادامه مطلب می خوانید تکمیل کردن جملات به روشن شدن بسیاری از مسایل کمک کرده است:
* مرد ۴۶ ساله ای می گفت: ” اگر قرار باشد پدر و مادرم را می خوشبختی خود معرفی نکنم در این صورت باید مسئولیت اعمال و رفتار بر عهده بگیرم، باید این حقیقت را بپذیرم که همیشه برای خودم متأسف بوده ام و از آن لذت برده ام، باید به این نتیجه برسم که هنوز خیال می کنم پدرم مسئول حمایت از من است. باید بپذیرم که هنوز خود را یک قربانی می دانم باید بپذیرم که بهتر است به شکل دیگری رفتار کنم، از منزل بیرون بروم و دنبال شغل بگردم.”
* مرد سالمندی که در نوشیدن الكل افراط میکرد میگفت: «اگر قرار باشد بپذیرم که مسئول سعادت زندگیم هستم، نباید زنم را مسبب ناراحتی و اعتیاد خود معرفی کنم، نباید به بارها و کافه ها بروم، نباید ساعت ها رو به روی تلویزیون بنشینم و نظام را سرزنش کنم، به استادیوم ورزشی می روم و ورزش میکنم، برای رییسم بیش از حدی که امروز کار می کنم، تلاش خواهم کرد تبدیل به آدم متفاوتی می شوم، به خودم احترام بیشتری می گذارم، به راه می افتم و زندگی ام را فعال می کنم.”
* زنی که با شکایت هایش دوستان و خانواده اش را کلافه کرده بود میگفت: ” اگر مسئولیت در قبال احساساتم را بر عهده بگیرم افسردگیم کاهش پیدا می کند، متوجه می شوم که چگونه خودم را ناراحت و به هم پاشیده میکنم، متوجه می شوم که تا چه اندازه منکر خشم خود میشوم، بیشتر به اتفاقات خوب زندگیم فکر می کنم، متوجه می شود که کاری میکنم تا دیگران به حال من احساس تأسف بکنند، به این نتیجه می رسیم که می توانم بیشتر خوشبخت باشیم.”
مولد بودن
کسی که هدف مولد و سودمند نداشته باشد نمی تواند در قبال خود احساس مسئولیت کند. ما با کار کردن از موجودیت خود حمایت می کنیم و با پرداختن به کارهای هدفمند به انسان بودن خود چیزی می افزاییم. بدون داشتن هدف های مؤثر و مولد و تلاش سازنده، ما برای همیشه کودک باقی می مانیم. البته واقعیتی است که در هر جا و در هر لحظه زمانی تحت تأثیر فرصت هایی که برایمان وجود دارد محدود می شویم. اما به هر صورت و در هر شرایطی که قرار داشته باشیم می توانیم از خود بپرسیم چه می توانم بکنم؟ چه کاری باید صورت بگیرد؟  «چگونه می توانم موقعیتم را بهبود بخشم؟» «چگونه می توانم از بن بست نجات پیدا کنم؟» . چگونه می توانم به بهترین شکل ممکن از نیروهای خود بهره بگیرم؟ قبول مسئولیت مستلزم داشتن نگرش پویا در قبال زندگی است. باید دانست که یکی از ارزشمند ترین چیزهای دنیا داشتن استقلال است استقلال هم بدون کار بدست نمی آید.
مستقل فکر کنید
لازمه زندگی پویا، داشتن اندیشه ی مستقل است و این خلاف سازگار شدن انفعالی با باورهای دیگران است. اندیشیدن مستقل لازمه زندگی آگاهانه و داشتن مسئولیت در قبال و است. زندگی آگاهانه مستلزم استفاده از ذهن خویشتن است. و برای رسیدن به مسئولیت در قبال خود باید استقلال رای داشته باشیم. کسی نمی تواند از طریق ذهن دیگران فکر کند. البته این واقعیت دارد که ما از یکدیگر می آموزیم اما دانش مستلزم درک کردن و فهمیدن است نه صرفا تقلید کردن یا تکرار نمودن. یا باید از ذهن خود استفاده کنیم یا مسئولیت کسب دانش را به دیگران واگذار نماییم و نظرات آنها را بی کم و کاست بپذیریم. انتخابی که می کنیم هم برای زندگی خود ما و هم برای آن زندگی که برای دیگران خلق می کنیم اهمیت دارد. اغلب اوقات، آن چه دیگران آن را اندیشه مینامند باز تولید عقاید دیگران است.
اصل اخلاق
لازمه قبول مسئولیت در قبال خود توجه به اصول اخلاقی است. باید دانست که سایر انسان ها بنده و خدمتکار ما نیستند و برای آن زندگی نمی کنند که خواسته های ما را برآورده سازند. ما به لحاظ اخلاقی حق نداریم از دیگران برای تحقق خواسته های خود استفاده کنیم، درست همان طور که دیگران نیز مجاز نیستند با سلطه جویی از ما برای تحقق خواسته هایشان استفاده کنند. هرگز از کسی نخواهید و انتظار نداشته باشید که برخلاف منافع و خواسته های خود عمل کند.
