۴- پذیرش مسئولیت: بعهده گرفتن مسئولیت یکسان برای آنچه شما در روابط بدست می آورید و تمرین عفو و گذشت.

برای پاسخ به این سؤال باید شما  بدانید چگونه آنرا یک روزه تجربه کردم. من و همسرم در رستورانی در فاصله وقت ناهاری که در یکی از سمینارهایم داشتم، منتظر نشسته بودیم. به پیشخدمت گفتم که عجله داریم. او به سرعت میزی را به ما نشان داد، لیست غذا را آورد ما هم سفارش دادیم. تا بحال بنظر می رسید که ارتباط من تأثیر خوبی برروی او داشته باشد. هنگامیکه مشغول سفارش غذا بودیم، گروه دیگری آمدند و در میز مجاور ما نشستند. همانطور که منتظر غذایمان بودیم دیدیم که این گروه جدید سر فرصت و با فراغت بال سفارش غذا داده و در عرض ده دقیقه غذایشان حاضر شد. با این حال که ما اول سفارش داده بودیم، ولی غذای آنها زودتر آماده شده بود. نبض من بشدت میکویید و غذایمان را نگرفته بودیم و رفته رفته عصبی شدم . سراغ پیشخدمت رفتم و با کلمات حساب شده ای گفتم: می خواهم به شما یادآوری کنم که عجله داریم. میز بغل دست مایه غذایشان را گرفته اند و سپس با صدای بلندی گفتم: غرای ما چی شد؟…

پیشخدمت گفت: آقا غذایتان آماده است.
پاسخ او کمکی نکرد. بنابراین دوباره تکرار کردم:« کسانی که میز کناری نشسته اند غذایشان را گرفته اند. پس غذای ما چی شد؟ پیشخدمت دوباره پاسخ داد: غذای شما بزودی آماده می شود.
نیازی به گفتن نیست که من چقدر عصبانی شدم، تمام مهربانی و خوش طینتی ام همراه با مهارتهای ایجاد ارتباطم از بین رفته بود. بطرف همان میز برگشتم و می خواستم دعوایی براه بیاندازم. همانطور که منتظر غذایمان نشسته بودیم، دیدم که کسانی که در میز مجاور ما نشسته اند غذایشان را تمام کرده و در حال پرداخت صورت حساب هستند. این لحظه دیگر برایم غیر قابل تحمل بود. من در مسیر خود برای یافتن مدیر رستوران دوباره پیشخدمت را دیدم و به او نزدیک شدم. پس از توضیح دادن اینکه من یک برنامه فشرده دارم از او پرسیدم: پس غذای ما چی شد؟ پیشخدمت با ترس پاسخ داد: آقای محترم غذای شما همین الآن

بالاخره دلیل اصلی ناراحتی ام را بروز دادم.
در این موقع پیشخدمت توضیح داد: آقا آنها از لیست ساندویچ سفارش دادند که آن لیست به آشپزخانه ی دیگری می رود. شما از لیست خوراکها سفارش دادید که آن به آشپزخانه اصلی می رود. اگر چه شما نمی توانید از اینجا ببینید اما ما گرفتار پذیرایی از یک مهمانی فارغ التحصیلی در سالن مجاور هستیم. آشپز به من قول داده است که سفارش شما را آماده کند. حقیقتا خیلی متاسفم که اینقدر طولانی شده است.»
در یک لحظه تنش و ناراحتی من از بین رفت چون می توانستم این موقعیت را درک کنم. با این درک صحیح از وضعیت توانستم با پیشخدمت همدردی کنم، من می توانستم آرام شده و منتظر بمانم تا غذایم بدون ناراحتی، خشم و اضطراب آماده شود. واقعا از دیدن منظره میزی که داشتیم لذت برده و از آن بیشتر از اینکه اوقاتی را در کنار همسرم میگذراندم، لذت بردم. می بینید که ارتباط من با پیشخدمت بی فایده بود مگر تا وقتی که من از آن برای درک و تفاهم بیشتر استفاده کردم. 
درک صحیح
 این فقط خود نحوه ارتباط نیست که باعث مؤثر واقع شدن روابط میشود. ارتباط چیزی جز وسیله ای که توسط آن می توانیم همدیگر کنیم، نیست. درک صحیح، روابط ما را غنی و پربار می سازد، در حالیکه درک غلط آنها را از بین می برد. ارتباط هدفدار به ما اجازه می دهد که درک صحیح را افزایش دهیم. ممکن است شما با کسی که عاشقش هستید کرده اید و پس از آن دریافته اید که این کار فقط به دلیل یک سوء تفاهم کوچک بوده است. یکی از مشکلات متداول در روابط این است که پس از اینکه کسی را شناختیم ، تمایل و کشش قوی نسبت به او در خود حس می کنیم و فکر میکنیم کارهایی که برای آن شخص انجام می دهیم همه درست هستند. ما تصور می کنیم که میدانیم برخوردهایمان چه معنایی دارند البته مکررا پیش آمده که معنای مورد نظر را اشتباه متوجه شده ایم و در پی نتیجه گیری غلط نیز داشته ایم.
من بیشتر اوقات در مشاوره با زوج ها، نقش یک مترجم را بازی می کنم. مرد مطلبی میگوید و زن طور دیگری می شنود. زن حرف دیگری می زند و مرد تصور می کند که او در اشتباه است و آنها در یک لحظه دوباره شروع به نزاع و ستیز می کنند. مثل این است که دارند به دو زبان مختلف سخن می گویند. با ترجمه درباره منظور مرد به صورت واژه ها و اصطلاحاتی که زن بتواند درک کند و یا بالعکس، نزاع خاتمه می یابد.

بخاطر می آورم یکبار از کسی که برای مشاوره نزدم آمده بود پرسیدم که از شوهرش چه توقعی دارد، «مارتا، نفس عمیقی کشید،شروع به گریه کرد و گفت: فقط می خواهم به حرفهایم گوش کند… سخنان مرا بشنود، احساس می کنم مرا دوست ندارد. همانطور که شوهرش  به حرفهای او گوش می کرد، متوجه شدم که سردتر و بی علاقه تر می شود. سپس در سکوت شانه هایش را بالا انداخته. من شاهد بودم که ناامیدی و مذمت زن در هنگامیکه که  همسرش در سکوت احساسات خود را بیرون می ریزد افزایش می یابد. بعد از زن پرسیدم واکنش شوهرش برای او چه معنایی داشت گفت: بدین معناست که به من اهمیت نمی دهد. می خواهد بگوید که در اشتباه هستم. اینکه من خیلی بیچاره ام و اینکه اگر چیز جالبی برای گفتن داشتم او به حرفهایم گوش میکرد. شوهر از خودش دفاع کرد و گفت که او درباره واکنش هایش اشتباه می کند. من از او خواستم بایستد و از وی پرسیدم که وقتی همسرش نیاز به حرف زدن دارد و آن را ابراز میکند او در درون خود چه احساسی دارد؟

مرد گفت: احساس ناامیدی می کنم، من به مطالب و کارهایی فکر می کنم که در طول هفته انجام داده ام تا او متوجه شود که چقدر دوستش دارم. من احساس عدم کفایت و بی لیلاقتی میکنم به این دلیل که نمی دانم چه کار باید بکنم. بعد هم وقتی به شما گفت که درباره واکنش من چه احساسی دارد، عصبانی شده و کاری کردم که او را به اشتباه بیاندازم.

زن واکنش بی علاقگی مرد را اشتباه درک کرده بود. او می پنداشت که مرد هیچ اهمیتی برایش فایل نیست و او را مورد انتقاد قرار می دهد. بطور طعنه آمیزی سوء تفاهم زن از عکس العمل های مرد واقعا او را وادار به احساس عدم توجه و خرده گیری اش نمود، هر چند پیش از آن او می خواست در واکنش خود نسبت به شنیدن اصل احساسات صدمه دیده ی همسرش از خود انعطافشان دهد. آنها بدون کمک یک روانشناس همچنان به بحث و دل خود ادامه می دادند.

احساسات مثبت و توجه و آسیب پذیری که همه ما بهنگام عاشق شدن داریم می تواند بسرعت به علت سوء تفاهم های ساده و فرضیات غلط از بین برود. فرضیات اشتباه شاید در واقع آن رفتاری که در ابتدا تصور می شد را برانگیزاند. بیشتر تنش های عاطفی در روابط از سوء تفاهم ناشی می شوند. ارتباط خوب فرصت ایجاد سوء تفاهم را کاهش داده و روابط مثبت تر را تضمین می نماید. آموختن بعضی مهارت های ایجاد ارتباط اساسی به بهبود روابط کمک خواهد کرد، اما آنچه واقعا نحوه ارتباط را مؤثر می سازد نیت درک تفاهم است.
راههای بسیاری از تفاهم که لازمه ی ایجاد ارتباط برای موفق شدن در یک رابطه است وجود دارد که عبارتند از:
– درک عمیقتر از خود و دیگران.
– درک این مطلب که چگونه مردان و زنان نسبت به استرس و فشار واکنش های متفاوتی نشان می دهند.

– درک اینکه ممکن است آنچه که فکر می کنید باید برای دیگران سودمند باشد سودی نداشته باشد، حتی اگر برای خودتان مفید به نظر برسد.
– درک اینکه اشخاص مختلف به زبانهای متفاوتی صحبت می کنند که شاید در ظاهر مثل زبان خود شما باشد.
